    Photo.net
A guide for beginners on selecting a camera.

  • Not too many photographers start with a 4x5' view camera, but that is rather a shame

  • View cameras are the most flexible cameras, usually made from a basic design that has not changed for over 100 years

  • You know the guy in the old time photo studio who photographs with his head under a cloth? He's using a view camera

  • Ansel Adams? He took most of his best photos with a huge 8x10' view camera

  • All those luscious ads for food in magazines? Taken with view cameras

  • A view camera is fundamentally a light-tight box with a slot at one end for a lens and a slot at the other for the film

  • That's right, the negative from a view camera is about the same size as a proof print that you get back from a 1-Hour lab

  • However, she had no trouble understanding my SINAR monorail view camera, an enormous contraption that intimidates 99% of experienced amateurs

  • That's because a view camera's controls are simple, direct, and physical

  • Another advantage of having used a view camera is that it gives you an understanding of perspective

  • With a view camera, the lens and film aren't fixed parallel to each other

    Using and Identifying Nikon Rangefinders
Detailed overview of Nikon's post-WWII rangefinders, with advice on lens and
    accessory selection.

  • Their combined Rangefinder / Viewfinders are small compared to the later Nikons or the Leica M, yet large and bright compared to their main competition -- the screw mount Leicas

  • The combined Rangefinder and Viewfinder window is nice (50 mm view only)

  • Much lighter than the S, its features included: A much larger Rangefinder/Viewfinder for the 50mm field of view

  • The S3 has a large 1:1 Rangefinder/Viewfinder with three non parallax corrected lines always visible--the 35, the 50, and the 105

  • After a lapse of only 4 decades, the venerable Nikon Rangefinder mount returns to the marketplace, complete with multi-coated lenses ! In Super Wides, the Nikon 21 and are prohibitively expensive as users from an economic point of view

Using the Nikon 35mm Perspective Control Lens
Describes the use of this lens. Illustrated with photos showing the difference
in perspective between shifted and unshifted photos of the same subject matter.

  • On normal Nikon lenses, the aperture is set with the f/stop ring and a little lever in the camera body holds the aperture open for viewing and focusing

  • According to Nikon's manual for this lens, the picture angle of the horizontally-joined frames is 78 degrees; the 35mm lens unshifted is good for 53 degrees, the 28 for 64 degrees, a 24mm for 74 degrees and a 20mm for 83.5 degrees, so you'd need a 24mm to get the same width of view

  • I don't have a 24mm, but what if I just took a picture with the trusty 28mm? It would look like this: Boring old 28mm: It's the same view with a 28mm

  • Contax G2, 28mm f/2.8, Elite 100 June 1999 Well, the field of view is close, but there's a lot of needless sky above and water below
