Arkeopolis News - University of Miami School of Architecture hosts Miami Beach Pier Museum Panel Discussion and Exhibition, August 2009

MIAMI BEACH PIER MUSEUM
PANEL DISCUSSION AND EXHIBITION
HOSTED BY THE UNIVERSITY OF MIAMI
SCHOOL OF ARCHITECTURE

WHAT: The opening exhibition of competition winners and selected entries and a panel discussion of competition jurors represent the final phase of an international design competition for a Miami Beach Pier Museum located at the end of Fifth Street in South Beach. The Miami Beach Pier Museum would stand as a “horizontal monument” to all the immigrants who have arrived on these shores in search of a better future. The designs for this structure house a museum in which personal effects, souvenirs, and photos belonging to the new generation of immigrants would be exhibited – those who came to the South Florida shores from the 1950s to the 1980s. This event is free and open to the public.

WHEN/WHERE: Wednesday, September 2 at the Jorge M. Perez Architecture Center Glasgow Hall and Gallery, located at 1215 Dickinson Drive, UM Coral Gables Campus. Panel discussion of jurors will start at 6pm followed by the exhibition and a reception at 7pm.

WHO: Competition jurors include Jean-Francois Lejeune, director of graduate studies, University of Miami School of Architecture; Rocco Ceo, director of undergraduate studies, University of Miami School of Architecture; Rene Gonzalez, Rene Gonzalez Architect, Miami; Zeuler Lima, architect and faculty member, Washington University, St. Louis; and Chad Oppenheim, Oppenheim Architecture + Design, Miami.

WHY: The competition, which drew 417 project submissions from around the world, was organized by Arquitectum, the international architectural competition firm based in Lima, Peru. Arquitectum is dedicated to promoting excellence in design and architectural creativity. The Miami Beach Pier Museum would not only function as an architectural landmark, but would also serve as a space commemorating the new urban dynamic of the city and the global multiculturalism which defines the beginning of the 21st century. The University of Miami School of Architecture is hosting the final phase of the competition with an exhibition and panel discussion of jurors.
