Terry's 1904 World's Fair Page -- Private Railway Coach Used By Abraham Lincoln
Private Railway Coach Used By Abraham Lincoln This quaint piece of transportation equipment was valued more for its historic worth than as a relic of pioneer railroading, because of its association with, whose private car it was during the stirring period of the Civil War.. Instead of having a place among other rolling stock in, the old car was housed in the Lincoln Museum with other relics of the martyred president, including the log cabin in which Lincoln was born.. The coach represented the highest type of the railroad palace car of 130 years ago and was interesting as a comparison with the modern Pullman of that time.. It was from the platform of this car that Lincoln greeted the people in his travels during his second campaign for the Presidency, and the parlor of the car he entertained many of the famous men of his time.

Except for wooden ties which could be cut out of the Sierra forests, all the Central Pacific's rails, locomotives, cars, and other supplies had to make the 15, 000 mile voyage by sea, around Cape Horn, South America, from the East.. A light car, drawn by a single horse, gallops up to the front with its load of rails.. Two men seize the end of a rail and start forward, the rest of the gang taking hold by twos until it is clear of the car.. At the word of command, the rail is dropped in its place, right side up, with care, while the same process goes on at the other side....Less than 30 seconds to a rail for each gang, and four rails go down to the minute.. The moment the car is emptied, it is tipped over on its side of the track to let the next loaded car pass it, and then it is tipped back again; and it is a sight to see it go flying back for another load, propelled by a horse at full gallop at the end of sixty or eighty feet of rope, ridden by a young Jehu [a fast reckless rider] , who drives furiously.
