. A total of 1, 056 vehicles (66 16-car sets) were built between 1984 and 1991.. Despite the inclusion of 4 trailer cars, with more powerful motors (230 kW per axle), and weight reduction measures, a maximum speed of 270 km/h was technically possible.. Trailer cars however, were fitted with eddy-current braking with discs on the axles to absorb kinetic energy.. 16-car X sets (withdrawn) Following passenger evaluation trials with the pre-production set X1, a total of seven X sets were built for use on Tokaido and Sanyo services.. The first four production units entered service in June 1986 as 12-car sets without bilevel trailer cars, numbered G1 to G4, and were used on Tokaido Kodama services until October in the same year.. These units were then renumbered as 16-car sets X2 to X5 with the inclusion of bilevel trailer cars, and were introduced on Hikari services from November 1986.. The noticeable difference over previous (0 series and 200 series) shinkansen designs was the inclusion of two bilevel trailer cars [see ] in the centre of the formation.

. All cars are motored.. E sets (withdrawn) The first trains were initially all formed as 12-car "E" sets for Tohoku Shinkansen Yamabiko and Aoba services, and for Joetsu Shinkansen Asahi and Toki services.. F sets The first 12-car F sets appeared in 1983, one year after the opening of the Tohoku and Joetsu Shinkansen lines.. From March 1990, four selected 12-car F sets (F90-F93) were upgraded allowing them to run at a maximum of 275 km/h on a small number of down Joetsu Asahi services.. At the end of 1997, one 12-car set (F17) was modified and renumbered as F80 [see ] for use on the Nagano Shinkansen to augment the normal E2 Asama services for the period of the Winter Olympic Games held in Nagano in February 1998.. G sets (withdrawn) The G sets were created from reformed E sets, and appeared first as 10-car units in 1987 for the all-stations Toki services on the Joetsu Shinkansen.. They were reduced to 8-cars in 1988.. H sets (withdrawn) These sets were formed initially as 13-car sets in 1990 by inserting a new type 249 bilevel trailer car into six F sets.

. Louis Car Co.. for a new type of suburban commuter car in 1955.. Inspired by similar cars on the Burlington, the all-new bilevel cars provided seating on two levels and could carry up to 169 riders.. And in 1958, the CNW ordered almost identical bilevel cars from Pullman-Standard to re-equip its Chicago to Green Bay, Wisconsin, trains.. Over the next several years, additional coaches and cab cars were ordered from P-S.. For the next 40 years, these cars were a fixture of Chicago-land commuter trains.. The Rock Island later used the design and as the suburban service was transferred from private to public operation, the cars were repainted for the Regional Transportation Authority (RTA).. Today, many are still in operation as part of the METRA fleet (While the remaining cars are slated for retirement by 2005, at least four, including the first coach and cab car, have been preserved at railroad museums.), and some are used by Amtrak and the Virginia Railway Express.
