. Inspired by similar cars on the Burlington, the all-new bilevel cars provided seating on two levels and could carry up to 169 riders.. And in 1958, the CNW ordered almost identical bilevel cars from Pullman-Standard to re-equip its Chicago to Green Bay, Wisconsin, trains.. Over the next several years, additional coaches and cab cars were ordered from P-S.. For the next 40 years, these cars were a fixture of Chicago-land commuter trains.. The Rock Island later used the design and as the suburban service was transferred from private to public operation, the cars were repainted for the Regional Transportation Authority (RTA).. Today, many are still in operation as part of the METRA fleet (While the remaining cars are slated for retirement by 2005, at least four, including the first coach and cab car, have been preserved at railroad museums.), and some are used by Amtrak and the Virginia Railway Express.. Modeling suburban service will be fast and easy with these new replicas of both coach and cab cars.

These cars: 1) Will enable "quick-starts" for demonstration commuter operation 2) Will accelerate the development of a commuter rail system (Delivery time for rolling stock is often 2 - 3 years and is a far more expensive option) 3) Are perfect for short-to-medium distance intercity market, as seating configurations and density can easily be tailored to the market served.. Though these cars are presently configured as high-density coaches, it is a simple affair to convert them to a food service and/or lounge, parlor or specialized use car.
Maryland Transit Administration
. Why can't my train have more equipment ? Several factors prevent MARC from adding more cars to our trains.. When all trains are operating at planned levels MARC uses 94 cars.. Often this many cars are not available for service and we have to "short" some trains.. The number of cars available varies from day to day.. Cars must be removed from service for a federally required twice-annual inspection or due to unplanned repairs to correct a problem that cannot be fixed while the car stays on the train.. With our present car fleet we simply cannot provide any more cars to operate on trains.. In addition, storage space for more cars is not available.. On the Penn Line there is no more space in Baltimore at night to store additional cars.. I don't like the single level cars.. Why can't my train operate with the bi-level cars ? Unfortunately 60 of MARC's 117 cars are the single level cars with 3 and 2 (with an aisle in between) seating.. Obviously with ridership at record levels we can't afford to hold these cars out of service.

Amtrak 90: Planned Growth for Profitability [Tactics]
Planned Growth for Profitability (this file) Planned Growth for Profitability: Tactics Capital Needs The biggest single obstacle to expanding the capacity of the Amtrak system to maximize market potential is the lack of passenger cars and locomotives.. Growth in available seat miles has experienced a slight increase because of the increased capacity of some newer cars.. This amount will enable Amtrak to acquire more than 2, 700 new cars and rehabilitate 450 older ones; to add more than 500 new locomotives; to renovate and modernize older stations, repair .. Equipment Needs Amtrak currently operates more than 2, 000 passenger cars and 300 diesel and electric locomotives.. Seven Turbotrains, 68 electric multiple-unit Metroliner cars and 14 diesel rail cars complete the fleet.. Although the corporation acquired more than 2, 000 cars by purchase and lease in its first years from the private railroad companies, most were more than 20 years old and many were in poor condition.

. Hawker Siddeley and, later, Bombardier, were able to sell 500 of these cars, and they have been seen operating in Vancouver, Los Angeles, Dallas and Miami/Ft.. Other attempts at double decker commuter cars, like Chicago's gallery cars, and Montréal's double-deckers, did not make as efficient use of the second level.. An interesting feature of these cars is the use of pneumatic tread brakes and disk brakes.. The cars are rated to provide braking up to almost 1 m/s 2 , which is unusually quick for a car of it's size.. None of these cars had cabs, and so had to be used with either a single level cab car, or an APCU.. Many or these cars were recently refurbished at GEC Alsthom's AMF Transport shops in Montréal and are currently are numbereed 2000-2079.. The second batch of cars, 71 in total and the last to be built by Hawker-Siddeley, were delivered from 1983 to 1984.. Fifteen of these cars featured cabs and are numbered 200-214 while the rest of them are numbered 2100-2155.

NJ-ARP Equipment Proposal
May 11, 2002 Modern Electric Multiple Units and Fleet Rehabilitation A More Cost-Effective and Operationally Efficient Method of Fleet Expansion Than Bi-Level Passenger Cars Saves $260.4 Million in Scarce Capital Funds Enhances Equipment Utilization Minimizing Operating Costs NOTE: The New Jersey Association of Railroad Passengers (NJ-ARP) has discussed this proposal with New Jersey Transit.. Contents: The New Jersey Association of Railroad Passengers (NJ-ARP) urges New Jersey Transit (NJT) to reconsider its proposed $692.5 million acquisition of 277 bi-level passenger cars, and instead examine a $432.1 million alternative which could save the corporation $260.4 million.. NJT has indicated its willingness expand passenger capacity by procuring 231 bi-level cars for systemwide use comprising 33, 495 seats for $577.5 million as well as purchasing an additional 46 such cars for the "Clocker" service incorporating 6, 670 seats for $115 million.. We believe the acquisition of 150 individually powered, self-propelled, electric multiple-unit (EMU) passenger cars, the rehabilitation of 102 Comet 1 and 1B cars, the purchase of 32 MTA West-of-Hudson cars, as well as the securing of 36 Amtrak Horizon cars for "Clocker" service trains would be a more effective use of scarce capital funds, enhance rolling stock utilization, and minimize equipment operating costs.
