Roger Colton : The Private Railroad Car Experience
  • News, reviews, history and commentary about the entertainment industry (But mostly about the Mouse) Welcome to JimHillMedia.com | in The Private Railroad Car Experience Roger Colton reveals to all us Disney dweebs that there are other things in the world besides theme parks and feature length cartoons.
  • . The parlor-lounge car at the rear of a streamlined passenger train.
  • . Some travelers took this to the next level by having their own private railroad cars built for their exclusive use.
  • . Captains of industry and families of old money all could be found at the playgrounds of the nation (such as White Sulphur Springs or Pacific Grove) aboard their private railroad cars.
  • . And if having a car at your beck and call wasn't required, the Pullman Company maintained a fleet of cars just for charter, with a staff ready to meet your every need.
  • . Some of the private cars were converted to other uses including hospital cars to carry home the wounded and those who gave their lives in defense of their country.

    The Pullman Car
  • Pullman Car " Red Oak" AKA Tourist Car 3116 This car, currently numbered for it's last owner as SPMW 5535, has led an average life, however; that is exactly what makes this piece a viable part of the JT&S museum.
  • . Being part of a fleet of over 10, 000 Pullman-owned cars, the "Red Oak" was the most typical type of Pullman car, a section sleeper.
  • . Originally named " Red Oak ", the car was built by Pullman in 1925 as a 12 Section-1 Drawing Room car, to Plan 3410A, Diagram 5.
  • . "Red Oak" was one of an order of 105 cars built between August and December of 1925, and one of 27 cars named ORANGE _or RED _, all originally assigned to service on the San Francisco Overland.
  • . In May of 1940 the car was outshopped as "Tourist Car 3116" , relinquishing the name.
  • . The 3116 was assigned to Santa Fe's "The Scout" , and was one of 31 tourist cars painted in a two-tone paint scheme for that service.
  • . The car was subsequently sold to the Southern Pacific in November 1953 due to the Pullman anti-trust suit, and eventually was converted to a Maintenance of Way bunk car.

  • . South West Trains Inner Suburban Trains The Class 455 fleet operate 91 of the 4 car units in 4 or 8 car configuration.
  • . This is part of a range of work being carried out by TfL to address the growing need for rail demand in the capital and to encourage more people to use the rail network.

  • . 13 the Kissack will run around its carriages to return to Port Erin.
  • . Each engine is named and carries brass nameplates on both their tank sides.  Tractive effort at 85% boiler pressure for the smaller Peacocks is estimated at 4, 940 pounds.
  • . Coal-fired, the coal supply is carried in a bunker located in the engine’s cab.  The current four in service Peacocks range in weight from seventeen tons twelve hundred pounds to twenty tons ten hundred pounds.  This weight variation is due primarily to larger boilers and tanks with increased water capacity.  Tank size has ranged from 320 gallons capacity of the first three Peacocks to up to 520 gallon tanks on No.
  • . In an attempt to reduce operating costs in 1961, two diesel railcars were purchased from the former County Donegal Railway in Ireland at only £160 each and were refurbished for Peel winter service.
  • . Work has been finished on rebuilding the passenger compartments.  The last piece of operating power to be acquired is a small twenty-foot twenty-one ton diesel engine purchased from Germany in 1992.  Numbered 17 and named the Viking , it is used for “works duty, ” notably shunting cars at the Douglas station.  Number 17 joined four small diesel engines built between 1956 and 1961.

    Durham travel guide - Wikitravel
  • . Take my car.
  • . By Car By road, Durham is easily reached from the A1(M).
  • . By Air Newcastle Airport is around 40km North of Durham and is served by many carriers and offers many domestic and medium-haul routes.
  • . There is an easyCar car hire location at the Airport.
  • . Durham Tees Valley Airport (formerly Tees-side Airport) is around 40km South of Durham and is served by mostly charter airlines, though some "low-cost" carriers offer services to domestic and short-haul locations in Western Europe.
  • . For visitors with reduced mobility a Shopmobility scheme operates from the Prince Bishop's Shopping Centre Car Park, but disabled visitors should bear in mind that Durham's pavements are narrow, winding and in some places very steep and many roads are cobbled.
  • . For the scariest pint in Durham, try The Shakespeare Tavern , the "most haunted pub in England".
  • . Best to only attempt this one if you have access to a car, though infrequent services do operate between Bishop Auckland (easily reached by buses 5, 6, X24, 722 and 724) and the museum itself.

    Guildford - Wikitravel

  • . By car Guildford is served by the A3 trunk road which runs from London to Portsmouth.
  • . If you are visiting for the day by car, consider using the Park & Ride site at the Spectrum leisure complex just off the A3 southbound, or the site on the Old Portsmouth Road at Artington (on the way to Godalming) and catching the dedicated express bus from these locations.
  • . By car Whilst not as bad as either London or Oxford, Guildford's roads can get very congested at peak periods.
  • . On the other hand, a car is the one (possibly along with cycling) of the only really practical ways of seeing a lot of the local countryside and villages.
  • . This map covers the area around and between Guildford and Aldershot at a scale of 1:50000 and is best for exploration by car or cycle.
