About of COMMUTER CARS
Prodrive
. A deal between automotive technology specialist Prodrive and Commuter Cars Corporation (CCC) of Spokane, Washington will see the Banbury-based company managing the construction of up to 100 radical new electric commuter vehicles every year.. Two high efficiency electric motors driving the rear wheels can produce a combined torque level of over 1, 000 ft lbs to deliver levels of acceleration more commonly associated with supercars than eco-friendly transport.. Commuter Cars Corporation is run by Tango designer Rick Woodbury and his son Bryan.. “We built our first running prototype in 1998 and we’ve been refining the design ever since.” Commuter Cars Corporation has chosen a route to production as radical as its vehicle design.. At the same time, they are used to building, modifying and testing passenger cars to the highest OEM standards.” “Prodrive is one very few organisations world wide that could actually do what we have done with the Tango, ” says Geoff Bye, Prodrive project manager for the CCC project.

Illinois Railway Museum - C&NW Gallery Cars
C&NW Gallery Cars From Rail & Wire Issue 179, September 1999 by Dave Phillips Looking much like they did in the early 1960's, before a lifetime of service on the Chicago & North Western and Metra, the three huge gallery cars make an impressive sight in their "new" paint scheme after arrival at Union this spring.. Photo by Peter Schmidt The acquisition of three former Chicago & North Western Gallery Cars was first reported in the January/February 1998 issue of Rail & Wire.. These cars are now on the property at Union, and have been repainted in their C&NW paint scheme and renumbered accordingly.. They were the first Gallery cars constructed for the C&NW.. The third car, C&NW 151 (Metra 8700) was built in 1960 as part of an order for 116 push-pull commuter cars constructed by Pullman Standard.. The 151 is the first of the cab cars in that order.. These control cab cars were the first of their kind for the C&NW, and the first of their type in North America.. This article will cover the acquisition of the cars, a brief history of both the cab car design and cab car 151 specifically, and the restoration work completed to date on the cars.

Why, that's just about the amount of time that last year's Oscars broadcast ran over schedule! Seriously, a commute (and usually one that's marred by traffic) is an indelible part of most people's lives, and by estimates, time spent in traffic will only grow lengthier as the years progress.. Here are 10 that we look for in cars we evaluate; we think you should consider them as well.. Automatic transmission Nine out of every 10 cars sold in the U.S.. Beyond that, we feel that air conditioning is a must, even on lower-scale cars.. Controlled NVH Cars like the Acura Integra Type R or the Toyota Celica GT-S are a riot when canyon carving on your favorite twisty road.. Again, most cars are a compromise between providing a sporty suspension system and a compliant ride.
C&NW Chicago Commuter Trains (1972)
C&NW Chicago Commuter Trains (1972) Overview Chicago and North Western's first bi-level gallery cars for Chicago commuter service arrived in 1954.. Cab-equipped cars arrived in 1960 to allow push-pull service, with locomotives pushing trains into the city and pulling them out.. These trains operated on three major routes from Chicago, with trains of up to ten cars during the rush-hour peaks.. These two cars are examples of the 157 bi-level (gallery) coaches produced for the C&NW by Pullman-Standard in 1960 through 1970.. The earliest cars could be recognized by the air conditioning intake above the double doors, which had two sets of louvers with a vertical separation in the middle.. On later cars, this intake was divided into quarters.. These two cars are examples of the 74 bi-levels with control cabs produced for the C&NW by Pullman-Standard in 1960 through 1968.. The air conditioning intake distinguished early cars from late ones, just as with the coaches.

Carsharing in the Washington, D.C. Metro Area
| Alternatives to the Car Culture Topics Need a car for only an hour? Want to run errands at lunch? Have a business meeting? Spouse has the car for the day? Try carsharing.. Carsharing is the solution for those times when you need a car.. With carsharing, you can rent the car for as little as a half-hour.. Cars are self-service and parked nearby.. Heres the best part: when you carshare, the price includes gas, insurance, and maintenance and you only pay for the time you use.. What is carsharing? Carsharing is similar to car rental with the main differences being you can use the carsharing vehicle for as little as a half-hour and the cars are located in the communities rather than at a central car rental location.. In short, carsharing serves as a unique cross between a rental car and cab service.. Carsharing began in Switzerland in the 1980's and has expanded throughout Europe to include 450 cities.. with carsharing organizations located in Seattle, Chicago, Portland, Long Beach, Los Angeles, Denver, San Diego, Boston, New York, and Washington, DC.
A COMMUTER CAR FOR THE MILLENNIUM
. If viewed as an air bag, the inflatable car will not need costly and toxic sodium azide propellant (read explosive) and it will not kill small drivers when they run into shopping carts in parking lots or drive down particularly rough roads (yes airbags have already exploded in cars driven on rough roads).. But back to inflatable cars.. In addition, as there would have to be a continuous flow of air through the car in order to keep the oxygen level to our liking, the result would be a general filtering of the whole atmosphere once enough cars of this type were on the road.. The tiller was never a great success in even the earliest cars.. In the great cause of global warming the very low mass of these cars will mean that their energy expenditure per mile traveled will be much less than any steel car thereby minimizing the production of all exhaust gases including the greenhouse variety.. Critics might say that nobody will drive an inflatable car when they have to mix with Mack Trucks and other denizens of the road but the merits of the concept are so compelling that cities might well designate zones in which only inflatable cars can be used.
