Welcome To The Retro Future
Like so many other stories profiled in the Retro Future, the ConvAIRCAR flying car was a noble (but doomed) attempt to push the boundaries of what is possible.. On paper, the ConvAIRCAR was truly the stuff of commuters' fantasies.. So what happened? The same thing that happens to all flying cars--the dream crashed and burned before it could take off...this time literally.. The ConvAIRCAR was not the first flying car to make it to the drawing board.. But public interest in a car-plane hybrid didn't take hold until after World War II.. Sensing the time was right for a flying car, they poured hundreds of thousands of dollars into developing a prototype built by aerodynamic engineer Theodore P.. But a flying car? What motivated the famously no-nonsense Dreyfuss--a devotee of Louis Sullivan's dictum that "form follows function"--to lend his talents to such a far-fetched endeavor? The cynic would say money; but, in truth, a flying car didn't seem that far-fetched at the time.

. User: Pass: Login Simple flying car for fun or serious use.. (+2) [vote , ] There have been many ideas for a flying car, some better than others.. A small car could be fitted with such a wing and a ducted fan propellor.. , May 10 2004 So, let's say the whole thing weighs 1, 400 pounds, how big of a parachute would you need? Anybody have any clue? , May 10 2004 From the examples on the linked website, it looks like there's a nearly linear relationship between parachute area and weight capacity: area weight 400 700 500 800 600 900 656 1000 Using a linear trendline, we get the equation: area = 0.8814 x weight - 210.17 (with R^2 = 0.9848) Assuming you're carrying 400 lb of passenger, the parachute area will be about 1376 sqft.. , May 24 2005 It seems like we think of the flying car backwards.. We start with a car and try to make it into a plane.. Why do we make cars so heavey anyway! , May 25 2005 Because they don't have to fly.
Halfbakery: Flying Aphid/Barnacle Powered Car
. Gene-splice flying insects and barnacles to power a flying car (+8, -5) [vote , ] Using gene-splicing technology, merge a flying insect (like an Aphid) and a barnacle.. Attach them to the outer panels or your "car".. The panels can send mild electric charges to the "Barphids" to manoeuvre the car forwards, backwards, left, right.... and UP! The Barphids reproduce right on the car, and the little baby Barphids quickly attach themselves to the car.. The Aphid/Barnacles are kept fed by a fly-through car wash that sprays a nutritious protein solution.. You could even splice some glowing jellyfish genes into the Barphids to illuminate the car.. , Aug 03 2001 Aphids aren't strong enough to move a car.. Have to genetically engineer your car to grow 20 elephant legs, 10 on each side.. (Mine already has a trunk, which proves this is feasible.) The car goes down the road with a smooth millipede sort of stride, and runs on peanuts.. , Aug 03 2001 What kind of swallow? African or European? , Aug 17 2001 A one-week-old car crash? , Aug 29 2001 Blade - where are you when we need you? Vuia Flying Car
R O A D A B L E T I M E S The Vuia "Flying Car" There is some uncertainty as to whether Trajan Vuia, a gentleman from Romania, was the first person to build a 'flying car'.. However, the question posed here is this - was he intentionally building a vehicle that could be used as an automobile as well as an aircraft? At one time he did publish a paper dealing with "an aircraft -car", and that might infer that the machine he flew was built for those two purposes.. He writes - "I think you are misreading the images as portraying a 'car' or 'carriage' even when in its earlier 'non-wing' configuration.. The use of two wheels in front and a rear 'tail' wheel or 'skid' became more common just one or two years later, - eg Bleriot." "The term Aerial Car riage was one of the early terms that described a passenger-carrying 'flying machine', not unlike the term 'Horseless Carriage'.. The term 'car' cannot be seen in the same way we use it today, and the French for car, as we know it, is 'voiture'.

Flying Car from Volante Aircraft
. The Flying Car is Here! New information: and The new drive motor for the Volante's ground travel has been installed and is about a month away from testing.. A product of Volante Aircraft in Santa Ana, California, this flying car design is a combination of a two-place, 150 m.p.h.. aircraft and a useful, highway-speed car.. It is a "take all parts with you on the road" flying car, consisting of a flight section which is removable from the car component, and which is transportable by the car in trailer fashion.. The flying car's conversion time goal, either way, is under five minutes for one person and that goal appears to be easily attainable.. The flying car's driving components are currently receiving durability testing in a ground vehicle that is driven daily, while the flight portion is being tested in California's Mojave Desert.. A quarter-scale model of the final flying car kit configuration is simultaneously being developed.. This production kit version of the flying car will have to remain proprietary for the moment.

. Monster Garage host Jesse James says old POPULAR MECHANICS covers featuring flying cars were his inspiration for building his own.. But will it fly? Here the car sits on the ramp at an airport near Kitty Hawk, N.C., ready for takeoff.. To cap off the hit show’s third season, Monster Garage host Jesse James decided to build a flying car.. Jesse’s not doing it to be able to sell flying cars to the public or even for the technical challenge--he just wants to prove he can.. In the center of the Long Beach, Calif., shop, a number of mechanics are chipping away the shell of a partially dismantled Panoz Esperante, an exotic aluminum and carbon-fiber sports car built in Atlanta.. There's a substantial pile of leftover Esperante parts in the corner of the shop, as nearly a thousand pounds of car have been removed to lighten it.. Within 36 hours this car has to be ready to fly.. An increasingly loud discussion at the back of the car attracts several crew members--and the hovering camera.

Talk About Autopilot! - Popular Science
. communitypowered include web results Talk About Autopilot! An aeronautical engineer presents a new twist on the ol’ flying car: the road-ready airplane By Gregory Mone | June 2006 John MacNeill Two hinges lock into place when the wings extend, securing the plane for takeoff.. Even though you’ll park it IN your garage, drive it to your nearest airstrip, and pilot it to your destination, don’t think of the Transition as a flying car.. Carl Dietrich, the MIT aeronautical-engineering graduate student who is designing the vehicle, prefers the term “roadable aircraft”—meaning a plane that drives, not a car that flies.. The projected price tag? About $150, 000, roughly the price of a fully loaded Ford GT sports car.. In car mode, the tail folds up, revealing a bumper.. But the 6.5-foot-high car will be able to reach highway speeds, Dietrich says, and could be refueled at any gas station that sells super-unleaded gas.. A security system, such as a thumbprint scanner, will keep Junior from “taking off” with the car.

That is the verdict of engineers from the US space agency and aeronautical firms, who envision future commuters travelling by "skycar".. These could look much like the concept skycar shown in the picture, designed by Boeing research and development.. When you try to combine them you get the worst of both worlds: a very heavy, slow, expensive vehicle that's hard to use Mark Moore, Nasa Langley Research Center Perhaps one of the best publicised efforts at developing this type of craft is the Skycar concept produced by Moller International.. The Davis, California, company has already flight-tested tethered prototype models and hopes to receive airworthiness certificates so that a limited number of its cars can be made available in the next few years.

The Long Term Support Flying Car - Where is Ploum ?
- - - The Long Term Support Flying Car Par Ploum, jeudi 1 juin 2006 à 11:47 :: , , :: :: - Once upon a time, on a little lovely blue planet, lived a man who thought that it would be so cool if everyone could have a free and ecological flying car.. You might not trust me but, at this time nearly 99% of the population was driving old, smelly and noisy rolling cars.. Yes, that kind of car with four wheels that stay on the ground.. Flying cars were already available but where often dismissed as too complex, to difficult to learn.. A lot of people tried to warn him : - Making a flying car is impossible.. You are wasting your time ! - But there is already plenty of different models of flying cars.. You have the plans and you can even modify your own car.. - Oh, I see ! That flying car ! (*laugh*) Only experts can use them ! - That's why I'm working on it.. If people can learn to drive a normal car, I'm sure they can learn with a flying car.. - AHAHA ! (*lot of laugh*) Building alone a whole flying car from scratch is nearly impossible.

I mean we're not living in the future until we have flying cars, right? has learned that NASA is addressing our grievances by funding the Personal Air Vehicle Challenge.. the idea of flying cars is awesome, but in reality they would be too dangerous in the hands of the average idiot who does not have the time to be bothered by watching the road to be worth it.. Simple solution: If you've been deemed liable in a ground accident, no air car for you.. This could be the real non insurance related reward that good careful drivers have always wanted.. Hey, Paul Moeller should grab that prize -- his Skycar (pictured) been coming soon since the mid-80s.. Yeah its not a lot in the grand scheme of building a flying car, but it helps- spaceshipone cost a lot more than $10 million to make, and that didnt stop them.
