  • . Locals in Cattolica used to get somewhat angry as I Pesaresi would "fare la siligata" in flash fancy cars and conquer and steal the local female talent from them!!! The car number plates from Pesaro bore the leters PS and so on arriving in Cattolica, it was easy to identify them and the letters came to stand for PS= Proprio Schemo or PS= Proprio Stronzo!!!! (Sorry can I say that here?).
  • . In 1999, the population of Cattolica were a bit sad when the new number plates came into force and didn't want to see an end to their fun with the introduction of new letters in place of the old PS!!!! You can immagine their joy when the new Pesaro and Urbino "targa" was announced-----------PU !!!!! (pronounced POO)!!!!! My husband on buying a new car, whilst living in Cattolica but having a hotel in Pesaro and the vehicle registered there, refused to have the new number plate letters.

    Plates after 1994
  • Plates after 1994 1994 - 1999: In October 1993 there was a major change in Italian plates: they are now made of just one part, still in black on reflective white, with the seal in the middle as you can see in the first two pictures.
  • . So, every configuration of four letters gives 1, 000 numberplates and as 22 letters (I, O, Q and U are skipped) are used, there are 22 x 22 x 22 x 22 x 1, 000 = 234, 256, 000 possible configurations of numberplates.
  • . It is estimated to have unique numberplates for about 60 years.
  • . Even if the origin code is not written directly on the plates, there are some techniques to understand where the car is from looking the 4 letters of the plate because the plates are distributed in groups to the various provinces (usually 5000 plates).
  • . For instance, Roma has got plates from ABHK to ABKC (from ZA 7xx CY to ZA 4xx DC), from ACRL to ACXX (from ZA 6xx FW to ZA 5xx GJ), from AGHF to AGSW (from ZA 3xx PY to ZA 2xx RV) and others.
  • . Back plates can be made of one or two lines, as you can see in the pictures (front plates are always made of one single line).

BBC NEWS | World | Europe | Greece accused of illegal car seizures
  • . One of Christos Rinis' cars was given to border police, who attached Russian number plates One of the problems seems to be that the Greek authorities think it is possible for someone to live abroad, and yet to be defined as a "resident" of Greece - and residents are obliged to pay Greek registration and road tax.
  • . Is this why people are reluctant to register their car and have Greek plates? Another reason why they may not want to change from UK plates to Greek plates is insurance.

Segura license plate design - Signal vs. Noise (by 37signals)
  • . I am of the opinion that license plates do quite a bit towards detracting from the lines and design cues of the cars they are put on.
  • . In some cases, the design on the plates are so overwhelming that the readability of the numbers themselves are jeopardized…I am a fan of simplicity and clarity, and in this case, take it a step further and suggest color matched plates, so in essence, the background color of the plate is the same color as your car, with either black or white numbers over that color (depending on contrast issues).
  • . 19 comments so far 27 Jun 05 Huh? Wha? This post was about license plates? I was, umm… distracted, I think… hehe Dan Boland 27 Jun 05 I’m not the biggest fan of the Illinois license plate (how can you not love the tackiness of the old design?), but mainly because the license plate number is just that — all numbers.
  • . =/ David 27 Jun 05 How about printing them on clear plastic so you don’t even need different plates.
