Rocket Car Legend - The "True" Story - Luxury At The Speed Of Sound - One aspect of the Rocket Car legend that always tickles me is that no matter how much the story varies, the make, model and year of the car is always specified.. In the Darwin Award version, there's no mention of which highway the car was on, or even whereabouts in Arizona the story took place.. But despite all these oversights, the story did specify that the car was a 1967 Chevy Impala.. You'll never hear someone tell a story about a guy in a rocket-powered K-car or a Volkswagen Beetle.. It has to be a car that deserves to have a rocket attached to it.. In the case of our Rocket Car, we gave some serious thought to not even using a car body.. As soon as we got back to the scrapyard, Beck wanted to weld one of the JATO's to a bucket car, stick the car on a track, and light the rocket.. He was doubtless the craziest member of Team Rocket Car, and if I'd been willing to go along with his idea, I have no doubt he'd have climbed in and lit the fuse himself.

I first read about it a few years ago, and since then have heard several versions of the rocket car story as it has transcended into the realm of urban legend.. I found one web site (now defunct, see links at right for a reprint of the site) that chronicles the events leading up to a rocket car, and what had happened to it.. I have no idea of the validity of the story, but I found it entertaining, and decided to go ahead and build myself a rocket car based on that specific story.. I started with Monogram's '59 Chevy Impala Hardtop, and built the body & interior box stock (though heavily weathered, since this was supposed to be a car from a junkyard).

The car would become airborne at around 200 mph as air goes under the car, which would cause it to flip over.. He estimates the car went about 180 mph.. This car breaks down after only 8.5 miles, 3 hours from Jamie’s shop.. Once the car is towed to the shop, the roof is reinforced with a steel cage inside of the car and a mounting platform is made.. Since the myth specifically states that the driver of the car died, Jamie makes the car remote-controlled.. Due to the limited range of the radio control transmitter and the possible speed of the car, Jamie designs the controls to reset to a preset position in case radio contact is lost.

And it turned out some guys did make a rocket car, only on a bit of railway track, and manage not to get killed? Cos that's a classic bit of a yarn, & well worth remembering, just for its summation of our species' inherent nature: crazy-genius monkey-rocket death-seducers.. First, anybody who understood the extreme forces involved well enough to attach a JATO unit to a car so that it would keep the car going in a straight line (rather than immediately spinning around) would not do it in the first place.

Gary Kuck and his Rocket Car LINCOLN, Neb.. – Picture this: It’s the Alabama State Fair in October of 1946, and “Antonio the Great” wheels his Rocket Car down the straightaway of a dirt track, tail ablaze with eight rockets belching fire and smoke.. This Rocket Car was originally the Don Hulbert Special.. The 220-cubic-inch V-8 wasn’t competitive at Indy and the car failed to qualify.. Granatelli and his two brothers owned a speed shop in Chicago and they bought the car.. In 1946, they added eight JATO rockets to the tail and 23-year-old Andy Granatelli campaigned the car at small dirt tracks and county fairs.. In 1983, the Rocket Car was brought back to its original Indy configuration by Stan Betz of Orange, Calif.. Two years ago, Gary Kuck of Lincoln, Neb., bought the car to use in the Great Race.. Gardner and Kuck put in countless hours on the car.. Gardner built the flathead V-8 and Kuck oversaw the car’s construction.. This year they hope it will carry them to the first victory of its career.
