George Pullman designed a superior sleeping car for use by trains in the mid 19th century.. Unlike other sleeping cars on the market, it was luxuriously appointed, and made sleeping a real possibility, instead of a cruel joke.. The only problem was his car was wider than the existing cars, and the train stations, loading ramps, and platforms were sized for the narrower cars.. The Pullman car was obviously the most stately, impressive and splendid car for the job.. They ordered that all the stations on the route make modifications for the Pullman car of the procession.. As the car made its way through the nation, lots of people came to see the train, and especially the beautiful Pullman car with Lincoln's casket.. After the procession, sales of Pullman cars took off, and other stations made the necessary modifications.

He was one of the first to use the enclosed vestibule and diaphragm between cars, the Westinghouse air brake, Janney knuckle couplers, steam heating, Pintsch gas lamps, and electric lighting.. Pullman's first all-steel car, the Jamestown, was built in 1907.. Additional work resulted in a lighter, improved car structure.. Production began in January 1910 with a car named Carnegie, and continued, using the same basic design, for the next two decades.. This standard car structure also allowed Pullman to standardize various mechanical systems, resulting in improved reliability in addition to the greater strength and safety of the steel cars.

Pullman felt able to carry out his plan as he had evolved it in his brain, and he then built his ideal sleeping coach.. This took a year to construct, in 1864-65, and was built in a rude shed in a railway car-yard in Chicago.. His coach of the future carried the dead president to his grave, and became known throughout the world.. Five days were spent in clearing the railway line between Detroit and Galena, where he lived, and the "Pioneer" carried the General over that line.

. My mother Emily Caroline (Minton) had a difficult time keeping me in school.. While I worked in Chicago I formulated a plan to improve the uncomfortable railroad sleeping car.. I took two of the old sleeping cars and remolded them to my satisfaction, only to be turned down by the railroad companies.. My brain, now being cluttered with railroad, construction, and carpenter skills, worked rapidly in trying in trying to combine then to get an improved sleeping car.. Together we applied for two patents for the sleeping car.. As soon as the second patent was relieved, Ben Field and I began construction on the sleeping car.. I used my knowledge well and the out come was a large and elaborate car that we named "Pioneer".. "Pioneer" was a large car that didn't fit under some bridges and railroad platforms, however, the railroad companies readily accepted it.. I was inspired by the success of "Pioneer" so I organized and founded the Pullman Palace Car Company in 1867.

The 81 foot car weighed 80 tons and had a four section, twelve seat lounge, a barber shop, and a twenty-eight foot baggage area.. The car was rebuilt into six double bedrooms, a buffet, and a lounge, and was renamed the DOVER HARBOR.. The DOVER HARBOR and eight other cars with this same configuration were built according to plan 4015 and were designated the .. Air conditioning, which was new to railroad cars at this time, was also installed.. After rebuilding the car, which weighed 87 tons, was repainted to the standard Pullman green and gold livery that it wears today.. After the renovation of the DOVER HARBOR was completed in May, 1934, the Pullman Company assigned the car to service on the Michigan Central Railroad, a subsidiary of the New York Central Railroad.

. The Pullman Company, owned by George Pullman, manufactured railroad cars, and by 1894 it operated "first class" sleeping cars on almost every one of the nation's major railroads.. To bring pressure on Pullman, the union asked trainmen to refuse to run trains on which Pullman sleeping cars were attached.. The union told the railroads that their trains could operate without the Pullman cars, but the railroads insisted that they had contracts with the Pullman Company requiring them to haul the sleeping cars.. The passenger trains also hauled mail cars, and although the workers promised to operate mail trains so long as Pullman cars were not attached, the railroads refused.. Pullman and the carriers informed federal officials that violence was occurring and that the mail was not going through.
