Pier 63 Maritime is a former car float (railroad barge) that is now used as a public access pier at the foot of West 23rd Street in Manhattan.. A loaded car float being pushed by a tugboat.. Photo (c) Bernard Ente 2004 Original use : Delaware, Lackawanna and Western railroad car float.. Speed : 0 knots Draft : 3' History: Originally built for the Delaware, Lackawanna and Western railroad, later known as the Erie Lackawanna Railroad, this historic car float was just like hundreds that were used to carry railroad cars from New Jersey to New York City.. Just north of this location stands one of the few remaining float bridges that were used to receive these barges.. The float bridges rode up and down with the tides so as to alway match the height of the surface of the barge.

In the years to come, there would be considerable expansion of the facility including ferry slips with railroad-tracked float bridges.. If you look through the middle of the covered wharf, you can see the steel or iron float bridge that was used to move railcars on and off the railcar ferries that came to call here.. (There is a close-up photo shown below.) The maps show two slips served by rail, but as far as I can see there is only one float bridge.. This 'close-up' shows the float bridges behind the covered loading shed at the end of the wharf.. To the right of that looks like what could be a timber hoist for the second float bridge, but it looks awfully low for a railcar or locomotive to move under it.

. In the first the New York Central & Hudson River Railway Company, as owners of a car float that was damaged, libels the steam tug Charles E.. The statement of facts, slightly abridged, is as follows: At about half-past 7, in the evening of February 1, 1905, the railroad company's car float was pro- ceeding up the Hudson river in tow of the tug Matthews, the navigation of the two being conducted solely by the master of the tug.. A collision took place between the car float and 15 D.. The Moran was guilty of other faults also, so that the tug and the scows all three wrongfully contributed to the damage done to the float.. The tug Matthews also was to blame, but the car float was not, unless, contrary to Sturgis v.. The question certified in the first case is, 'In what proportion shall the damages sustained by the car float be assessed upon the offending vessels?' In the second the same question is put concerning the damages sustained by the libellant, the owner of the two scows.

. His duties included work aboard petitioner's car floats moored in navigable waters.. He was injured on a car float while releasing allegedly defective hand-brakes on a freight car which was being unloaded from the car float by a switch engine.. Their duties included work on the petitioner's car floats that moved freight and passenger cars from and to the Yard by water.. Having already removed cars from three floats, the crew began to unload one carrying box cars.. O'Rourke was required to climb up on each and release the hand-brakes, so that the cars could be pulled off the float by the engine.. 51, note 1, supra, gives a right of recovery due to defects because of carrier negligence in, among other equipment, "boats." We need not, however, in this case, determine whether the car float is a "boat" that should be regarded as in substance a part of a railroad's extension.. That case involved a railroad employee injured while loading freight into cars located on a moored car float.

City officials said that freight could once more be transferred from railroad cars onto trucks there, and that loaded rail cars could be floated from the yard to New Jersey on barges - a method once widespread in New York Harbor but now rare.. In the announcement, the Economic Development Corporation highlighted the site's capacity for floating freight cars as well as its proximity to manufacturing, commercial and warehousing businesses.. "By putting a rail car float system into operation on the Brooklyn waterfront, we could potentially divert approximately two million tons of freight a year from truck to rail and eliminate tons of air pollutants annually." In early 2001 the agency selected a bidder, Canadian Pacific, to operate the yard, even though, as a spokesman for the railroad recently said, it had no desire to operate the float system.
