University of Florida News - UF robotic car may compete for big prize in DARPA grand challenge

  • . — A team that created a fully robotic car leaves Sunday for California, where it will vie for a spot to compete in a race with similar cars for a $2 million prize.
  • . The challenge requires autonomous cars to drive themselves up to 175 miles over torturous desert terrain featuring natural and man-made obstacles such as ditches, cliffs, boulders, open water, underpasses and other vehicles.
  • . “It’s been a fantastic experience, and the team is thrilled to have gotten this far.” Although the team competed in the inaugural DARPA Grand Challenge in March 2004, no one came close to winning the event, which required the cars to complete a 142-mile course from near Los Angeles to near Las Vegas across the Mojave Desert.

  • . Thrun said he has long been interested in various aspects of robotics and artificial intelligence, but became interested in robotic cars when the first DARPA Grand Challenge was run in 2004 and none of the vehicles completed more than 5 percent of the course.
  • . Thrun also shares a longer-term vision -- say five or 10 years -- of robotic cars driving commuters to work, allowing their non-driver occupants to reclaim some of their commute time for productive activities or just relaxation.

  • . Project representative Professor Sebastian Thrun told the Palo Alto Weekly that he believed that, in five to ten years time, robot cars could drive their owners to work along a pre-set route, enabling drivers to relax or use their commuting time for more constructive activities.
  • . It's going to be a multi-billion industry.' Thrun went on to say that robotised cars could also help road safety.
