About of SINGER CARS

Singer Owners' Club

  • In the late 1880's George Singer, cycle manufacturer of Coventry, sold one of his machines to the Queen of Portugal, from then until the demise of the marque his name has been associated with quality both in his motor cycles and later still, his cars.
  • . It was this remarkably advanced and potent engine that fathered the very successful sports cars of the 1930's and from it stemmed the series that really did not end until 1958.
  • . Singers were the first British manufacturer to fit independent front wheel suspension and a clutchless gearchange achieved by the use of a fluid coupling and, with something like forty types of cars, ranked as the United Kingdom's third largest manufacturer.
  • . In those days-in fact-right up to 1937-all Singer cars carried a twelve month guarantee against the need of a re-bore within 25000 miles.
  • . Never before, recalled the widely experienced Sammy Davis, had an entire team of racing cars been destroyed at the same point in one race-miraculously without harming one of the drivers.

  • . "He was alone in the car at the time and no other driver was involved." An LAS ambulance and two fast response cars were at the scene within minutes.

    Brief Introduction to Singer
  • The History of Singer Cars The Singer car company grew, like so many, out of a cycle business in the Midlands.
  • . Singer started life producing motorcycles and then evolved to cars in the early 1900s.
  • . Prior to that, cars had either been heavy and over-engineered or lightweight flimsy cycle-cars.
  • . This had a great engine, fitted with a single overhead camshaft - a first for British mass produced cars.
  • . Three out of four cars crashed and this marked the down-turn for Singer.
  • . A few cars came and went during the Depression and the next success had to wait to the introduction of the Roadster in 1939 - not great timing given subsequent world events.
  • . Robin Throp, in an article in Singer Owner, September 1997 says 'of the 11, 000 produced approx 2, 000 could have survived world-wide, and say 10% are runnable, then 200 cars could be viable, or perhaps 100 at any one time.

  • . The Singer Ten was appropriately sized and weighted, lighter than most existing cars but heavier than motorcycle-based models.
  • . Factory apprentice Billy Rootes bought fifty of these cars when they were first brought out and used the profits from reselling them to start a motoring empire which would acquire and integrate nearly all of the British car companies not acquired by Ford or General Motors before foundering.
  • . As with most cars, World War I saw the factory devoted to war materials, but in this case it was producing the same cars for the military.
  • . The Ten had grown and gotten heavier; the Junior was, like the Austin 7, a return to lighter, more nimble cars.

Rootes Group cars - Hillman, Humber, Singer, Sunbeam
  • Rootes Group cars: Sunbeam, Singer, Hillman, Humber, and more Chrysler bought a large number of British nameplates when they acquired the single British company Rootes Group.
  • . Rootes was much better at buying companies than at building cars; there is a singular pattern of buying companies, shutting their factories and abandoning their product lines, and just keeping the nameplate going, sometimes not even going that far, making one wonder why they squandered their cash so readily.
  • . Some of Hillman’s cars after the War were the ill-fated Imp, the, and the Hunter.
  • . Larger cars came in the shape of the 1902 four-cylinder 12hp, which was soon followed up in 1903 by a three-cylinder 9hp and a four-cylinder 20hp model.
  • . Until 1908, Humber cars continued to be produced in Coventry and Beeston, but thanks to financial difficulties, the Beeston factory was closed (despite producing higher quality cars), allowing the company to concentrate on one factory.
  • . The cars were designed by FT Burgess, and were powered by double overhead camshaft 3.3-litre four-cylinder engines.

Chrysler Europe - Simca and Rootes, including Hillman, Singer, and Humber
  • . (Simca was formed in 1935 to built Fiat cars under licence for the French market.) The Vedette had used a 143.5-cid flathead V8 (2.60"x3.37" bore & stroke).
  • . The large Humbers were beginning to be out of date, so the main business was concentrated on the "Arrow" cars - square four-door sedans and wagons with conventional live rear axle and ohv engine, which became the Hillman Hunter and Minx.
  • . These cars ran from 1966 until 1979 then went to Iran as the Peykan, where they were still popular and in production in 2001.
  • . Chrysler UK (as it was now renamed - in 1976 the Hillman name, which was the only one left, was replaced with Chrysler so the cars became the Chrysler Hunter, Avenger etc.) called this new car the Alpine and added it to the existing range rather than replace anything.
  • . This is in a total market of about 1.5 million cars sold annually at the time.
  • . I believe it was one of the best cars ever made and I can't figure out why it discontinued.
