. | > Commentary > ADVERTISEMENT Commutication Breakdown Cars pollute the dictionary too By Mark Peters 18 May 2006 I don't want to rock your world too severely, but it's come to my attention that cars cause problems.. There's also a metric truckload of other health and environmental nightmares caused by monoxides, dioxides, hydrocarbons, and other yummy emissions.. Meanwhile, our car-propelled reliance on fossil fuels keeps us hooked on Mideast oil like some kind of red, white, and blue crack-smoking eagle.. But there's a lesser-known victim of car culture -- our language.. But car culture? With apologies to Tom and Ray, car talk has only uglified the English tongue.. Burroughs was right when he said "language is a virus from outer space, " then these terms could spread like a deadly word flu -- mouth to mouth! In the interests of inoculation, documentation, and humoration, here are eight real and wretched car-related terms undreamt of by Shakespeare or your high-school English teacher.

. | > Commentary > ADVERTISEMENT Driving a Hard Bargain Mileage-based car insurance could be a boon for the environment By Elisa Murray, Elm Street Writers Group 03 Nov 2003 Most of us don't think much about car insurance.. And come they do -- each exactly the same amount, no matter whether we've driven across the country or left the car in the garage.. You Get What You PAYD For The good news is that small changes in everyday activities, such as how we market and sell car insurance, could make a big dent in problems like these.. Out here where I live and drive in the Pacific Northwest, the state of Oregon is taking a crack at lowering car insurance costs and reducing the collateral damage from driving.. Essentially, pay-as-you-drive makes buying car insurance more like buying gasoline: The less you drive, the less you pay.. These drivers should have left the car at home.
