CASTIGLIONE DI SICILIA
THE COUNTRY AND THE GOLE OF ALCANTARA
It is difficult to describe in few words the history, the art, the traditions, the expectations of this village.... Castiglione di Sicilia with its churches (5), build between the VII-IX sec, is situated about 600 meters from the sea level and counts approximately 5000 inhabitants. The castle (Castel Leone) is one of the prides of the village, and it is also possible to enjoy one magnificent sight of the Etna and the village. The most important attraction of the village are medieval roads that resisted to the earthquake in 1693. Characteristics are a lot of small medieval roads, that lead to the village public square, and also to the medieval bridge that crosses the Alcantara river.
The Alcantara river, that in summer time receives hundreds of tourists from all the world, slides between enormous basalt stones and has to be considered like one spectacular sculpture of the nature. It is possible to climb the river, adequately dressed, and enjoy not only the spectacular lavic sculptures, sed also the typical flora and fauna. In the bars near the Alcantara river, it is possible to taste typical products: the “granite” of lemon, “arancini”, the orange juice and other important typical products.
