The Mountain Folk Collective
Who we are: The group is composed by male and female voices, string instruments; guitars, violins and reed instruments, accordions and diatonic accordions. Combined with percussions and other instruments of the folk traditions from Pistoia’s mountains . After 30 years from the debut( March 8 ,1973) in the occasion of Women’s day, And after 20 years since the last concert (1984). The collective is recomposed with a few elements that were part of the historical nucleus Sergio and Anna … and others), and many other girls and boys from various extraditions and professions that were united by the passion of folk songs. The Mountain Folk Collective sing and play the octave rhyme, the working, the social, the protest, and the love songs. Songs of respect for civilizations, the chants of May and antique pieces dedicated to women, lullabies and non-sense. From the conflict between ”The Landlord and the Farm worker “ up to “Poor Soldiers”, “The Train to Bastia” and the “Carter”. We’re back because we want to recover our culture, understand where we come from. For the need of solidarity and the common feeling of constructing together. For the hope of reciprocal respect and against intolerance . Sergio Gargini’s philosophy is that to point the attention on research and recover the authentic musical traditions (the way of Caterina Bueno; his muse inspirer for the numerous folk lovers gender). Sergio says: “In a world where vulgarity prevails and where our traditions and roots are forgotten” We felt the need to come back to work because there’s a lot of willing to recuperate the traditions of the mountains and restore it to the people. At the beginning the historical group, in 1973 made a political – cultural initiative that brought the people with their problems in first position, and their dramatic stories. The women could tell about their difficulties in the only way that they had at disposition : with music, poetry, and stories. For months Sergio went through the mountains with a recorder and dugged in peoples memories, so that the chain of memories would not be broken. Sergio says “it is all documented in thirty cassettes realized between 1973 and ’76 of absolute philological value. Much of the documentation was then printed . The material is not of my personal property, but patrimony of the population of the mountains and it will be donated to city hall only when there will be a precise project.” This is our world, and we believe that music is a way to bring people together, even people of different cultures and languages .Our concerts occur in the most different places, streets, stages, through town festivals and court yard feasts. Who don’t know us could be inducted to think that our exhibitions might seem improvised, but this is the important part of our repertory that permits us to maintain intact the typical freshness of the popular tradition .We are waiting form you to come singing with us….we’ll have a great time!!!! |
