Gates is a total new collaborative art experiment, creating a circulation of action-communication, between real and cyberspace, between visual and word, related to the symbolic icon of the Gate, with its real, metaphoric, of computer science, and telematic, implications, gates as ways of transit, as dimension of open, of confrontation, of passages in every direction, at every level.

We are creating together a new form of art that uses as matter communication, relationship among persons, art debate, our real/virtual body, voice, gesture, exploring hypothesis of remote action and ubiquity (Karenina.it is all this), so, experimentals! poets, critics, theoreticians! e-post-Fluxus casseurs, e-post-post-duchamp-ists (?), you are welcome!, Karenina.it is an open gate for what you think, and for what you do.
The interface between real and virtual as a sensible semiotic area for a non-iconic (but not iconoclast) art/poetry made of bytes, words, friendship.

This project is ongoing, started on July 4 2003, Part 2 in course until December 31, it will
continue, and has been included in the Paris Biennial 2004.
Referring to the polemic against net.art only as interactive spectacular
game on line, using new (and soon obsolete) software, I recently increased
the reality coefficient of my network art.

I am an artist and writer from Italy, both active in new media art/poetry
and critical thinking; I am experimenting with new media since 1990. My
recent research deals with a new kind of performance where materials arrived
from the Internet are re-elaborated in real performances, also using video.
I also realize net.art performances, where visual and writing come together
in collaborative planetary events. For more information see

My project is to create a multilingual book documenting net.projects born in the context of Karenina.it since 1998 (Karenina.it /Index Karenina.it, Parallel Action - (Bunker Poetry Bunker - 49th Venice Biennale), Paint from Nature, Global Poetry, Gates).

Some information:

1) Many artists didn't understand well what is requested to participate and continued simply to submit their videos and their images.

REMEMBER: Gates is a collaborative art experiment, it is a non-conventional exhibition; we are NOT interested in receiving video or digital images on free topics, but in creating a circulation of action-communication, between real and cyberspace; please, scroll down and read carefully how to join GATES. Use a translator for English language, if needed...

2) The actual situation:
We are realizing the project in the decentralized sections, with nodes in: GREECE, USA, UNITED KINGDOM, GERMANY, ITALY, SPAIN, BELGIUM, FRANCE, BRAZIL, AMAZZONIA, VENEZUELA, and other countries. More spaces possible in every country.

3) Who already has subscribed by e-mail should let us know when, where, has placed his gate in his town, what has done under/around it, to be included in Gates web site and to be part of the book with the best of Karenina.it net-projects.

4) Sent videocassettes or other materials will not be returned.

5) We are creating a web catalogue, so, please, try to send soon as possible pictures and videos of your door and of what you have done under/around it.

6) Will be included in the book and in the web site only the projects accepted, realized and documented in video, or digital photos, or both, trough September 30 (GATES Part 1), December 31 (GATES Part 2). But GATES will continue...

7) WHAT IS REQUESTED TO PARTICIPATE IN GATES PROJECT

Remember it is requested to the participating artists:
a. to reproduce a "real" installation in form of door, IN THEIR COUNTRY (it is necessary you to send to us the address of the place),
b. to organize/do performance, or meetings, or poetry readings, or projections under or around YOUR door, or using the door as scenery, or using the door to perform in/around it (let us know the dates, you have a long period, months, to organize everything)
c. we expect you to send to us what you have done as video VHS PAL, or as a sequence of digital photos jpg, CDROM.
More wanted formats: VHS PAL standard and jpg files (please no MAC files). We will present what arrives from you in Italy (places to determine)

d. you will receive video documentation about ALL the participants in the Gates project, to be presented and viewed it a planetary network.

Thank-you very much for your interest in our project. Karenina.it Staff and I are waiting for videos of the events happening under your decentralized Gates, and gif images, reportages, critical reports, about what you are going to do/have done over there, so far.

Do not forget to mention in your local press releases or invitations, that this project is dedicated to the great Pierre Restany, who appreciated GATES Project and tried to find for it a node in Paris.
