Dalla psichedelia all'hard rock

Deep Purple è il titolo di un evergreen portato al successo da Bing Crosby. Ma è anche un nome intonato per una nuova band che nasce nel mondo psichedelico londinese. È il 1968 e la creatura prende forma. Comincia una lunga storia che definisce classici divenuti immortali, si illumina di spettacolari concerti dal vivo e soffre per interminabili battaglie tra ego mai appagati.
 
 
 
STORIA DELLA BAND

Rod Evans (voce), Nick Simper (basso), Jon Lord (tastiere), Ritchie Blackmore (chitarra) e Ian Paice (batteria), la cosiddetta "Mark 1 line-up", nel 1968 debuttarono con "Shades of Deep Purple". Un discreto successo arrivò coi successivi singoli, le cover: "Hush" di Joe South e "Kentucky woman" di Neil Diamond. Nel 1969 uscirono "Book Of Taliesyn" e "Deep Purple". Il fallimento della casa discografica americana fu decisivo per alcuni ripensamenti nel gruppo, e Simper e Evans furono sostituiti da due membri degli Episode 6, Ian Gillan e Roger Glover. La band tentò dapprima la strada "progressiva" cara a Lord con "Concerto for Group and Orchestra", ma Glover e Blackmore spingevano per inseguire i Led Zeppelin nella corsa all'enfatizzazione "hard-rock" dei giri di blues, e con questo spirito fu ealizzato "Deep Purple In Rock", le cui "Speed King" e "Child in time" conquistarono il pubblico, così come i successivi singoli "Black Night" e "Strange Kind Of Woman". Nel 1971 "Fireball" consolidò la loro reputazione hard, e nel 1972, il superclassico del rock "Smoke on the water" proiettò l'album "Machine Head" e i Deep Purple ai vertici delle classifiche. Con buona scelta di tempo, lo stesso anno uscì "Made in Japan", celeberrimo doppio dal vivo che fece venir voglia a tutta una generazione di vederli suonare in concerti in cui, oltre al fracasso da Guinness dei Primati (vi furono orgogliosamente iscritti), i cinque giocavano con la musica e gli strumenti. Proprio i tour tuttavia affaticarono la band: il deludente "Who Do We Think We Are" (1973) indusse Ian Gillan a lasciare il gruppo per intraprendere la carriera solista. Fu rimpiazzato da David Coverdale. Nel 1974 se ne andò Glover, sostituito da Glenn Hughes. La line-up di "Burn" e "Stormbringer" (1974) non durò molto: Blackmore litigò con Coverdale e lasciò il gruppo per dar vita ai Rainbow. Lord e Paice chiamarono un nuovo chitarrista, Tommy Bolin, che morì di overdose nel 1976. Nello stesso anno, i Deep Purple collassarono. Glover si unì ai Rainbow, e Coverdalee Paice formarono i Whitesnake. Ian Gillan, dopo una collaborazione coi Black Sabbath, formò la propria band. Con l'esaurirsi delle fortune (notevoli nel caso dei Whitesnake) di tali progetti, nel 1984 la "Mark 2 line-up" tornò clamorosamente insieme per "Perfect Strangers", che ebbe ottimi riscontri di critica e pubblico. Nel 1987 viceversa Gillan si dichiarò poco convinto di "The House of Blue Light" e fu prontamente fatto accomodare, sostituito da Joe Lynn-Turner. Il gruppo somigliava terribilmente ai Rainbow, e le scarse vendite di "Slaves & Masters" del 1990 indussero a riprovare con Gillan, nonostante le frizioni con Blackmore. A levare le tende stavolta fu quest'ultimo, durante il tour del 25ennale di "The Battle Rages On" (1993), registrato in "Come Hell or High Water" (a concludere la tournèe fu chiamato Joe Satriani). Nel 1996, con Steve Morse, già nei Kansas, come chitarrista, uscì "Purpendicular". Nel 1998 la stessa formazione propone "Abandon", mentre il 25 e 26 Settembre 1999, i Purple con alla chitarra un giovane Steve Morris, ritornano alla Royal Albert Hall di Londra per incidere nuovamente con l'orchestra sinfonica quel capolavoro uscito circa trent'anni fa.
