The first adventures of Barbapapà and its family are narrated in the long-length feature "Adventures of Barbapapà". It reassumes the content of the first four comic strips. Altough it was for a children target, the stories face complex themes such as the difference and of the ecology. Barbapapà - a sort of big and friendly blob from the curious pink color - it is born sprouting from the subsoil of the garden of a normal house of province. Everything other reaction they have the two children that live you instead, François and Claudine, that will soon become the first friends of Barbapapà. It will be for them a special companion of games: principal characteristic of Barbapapà was in fact that to model his body, assuming the form of things or animals to resolve a problem. The transformation is always accompanied by the sentence that it will become the most-remembered thing of the series: "Clickety-click... Barba-trick!".

At the beginning, Barbapapà was to be considered as an outcast, victim of the distrust of the adult society, beacuse of his unpublished aspect and by his colossal dimensions, even if during the time, its versatile peculiarity that allows him the most disparate transformations, will reveal him to be precious to disentangle problems, to save human life, to capture the animals run away by a zoo and much other.

The second serious problem was the loneliness: him in fact it is the only being of his kind that is known. With the help of the inseparable friends Barbapapà departs for one poetic trip to the search of one "Barbamamma". Inserted inside a small trailer hauled by the bicycle of the two friends, Barbapapà touches the principal countries of the world. The search happily concludes him really in the house of the two children: same give garden from which one day is mysteriously blunt he, is born in fact Barbamamma (in French "Barbamama"), from the forms more graced, more "female".

Last but not least, there was the problem of building speculation and relative consequences. The family of  Barbapapà made a house where all the animals were protected by the huntings and the increasing pollution. Because of the presence more and more dominant of the industrial economy and of the traffic, the family and the animals they are forced to abandon the Earth into a spaceship, a sort of their version of the Noè's Ark, surrendering the planet to his sad destiny of grayness. When the human race was alone, they are retracted on their behavior, understanding that the nature must be respected! Barbapapà family that have never stopped observing their place of origin, reenter on the Earth with all the animals.

Barbapapà and Barbamamma decide to create a family: we learn that theirs small are born from eggs deposed in the same ground that has given them the native. From the two union they are born therefore seven barbabebés, each with characteristic well definited: Barbabelle is violet. As it says the name, it is her "beautiful" of the family: she loves the jewels and the perfumes and she hates the insects. Barbadur is red. He is the sportsman of the family: combative and rebellious against the soprusis. Endowed with cape and lens to the way of Sherlock Holmes, he also has to be a good detective, and develops his investigations with his brother Barbabravo and a dog named Lolita. Barbalala is green. She is the musician of  the family. She also Loves the botany and the ecology as his brother Barbazoo. Barbouille is black as his mother and hairy. It is the artist of house and his black fur is often dirtied some colors that it uses for painting. Barbotine is orange. Stereotype of the intellectual, brings the glasses and loves to read. Intelligent and ironic, it has a good time provoking his brother Barbabarba with joky comments on his paintings. Barbidou is yellow. He's a lover of the nature and he knows all the animals and the plants, the various types of climate and the problems that it causes the pollution. In few words he is a convinced ecologist. It is also doctor and veterinary. Barbibul is blue. It is the scientist and inventor of the family: however some of its ideas are too much audacious and its experiments end up causing catastrophic consequences.

Their shapeshifting is usually accompanied by the saying "Clickety Click—Barba Trick" (in the French version "Hup Hup Hup, Barbatruc", "Ra-Ru-Rick, Barbatrick" in German, "Huub huub huub, Barbatruuk" in Dutch, "Hüpp Hüpp Hüpp, Barbatrükk" in Hungarian, in Turkish version "Hop hop hop, Değiş Tonton" in "Resta di stucco, è un Barbatrucco" in the Italian version, in Arabic "بربا الشاطر ---أعظم ساحر ", in Greek "kli kli kolpo, barba kolpo").
