. To meet this growing demand, fish farming, or aquaculture, an already booming industry, will continue to expand, since most of the world's existing wild fisheries are tapped to capacity or beyond.

. Shireman Ornamental fish production for the aquarium industry is a multimillion dollar industry in the United States.. The Florida industry dates back to the early 1930s, but its major expansion has occurred in the last 20 years.. With modern advances in air transportation, fish from other areas of the world are becoming more available to the industry as well.. Competition from the Far East is probably at its highest in the live-bearer section of the industry.. Many producers today are starting to utilize information generated from food fish aquaculture, and reproductive successes with the use of hormones are allowing the industry to produce fish which were previously unavailable from farms.. The entire technique is similar to the reproduction of the chinese carps (grass carp, big head carp), and this is a classic example of how one aquacultural industry can benefit from another's success.. Again, the extreme diversity of the industry prohibits gross generalizations in this area.

. This proposed amendment is the result of the longstanding need to respond to the Canadian salted fish industry’s concerns regarding the existing provisions of the FIR with respect to salted fish.. The Canadian salted fish industry, through individual stakeholders and its industry associations, first identified the need to amend the salted fish portion of the FIR to the Department of Fisheries and Oceans approximately fifteen years ago and over the years considerable effort was expended in developing regulatory proposals.. However, with the changes to the industry and to markets as a result of the collapse of the Atlantic cod fishery, a significant sector of the salted fish industry could not support the amendment as presented.. As a result, the proposed amendment was revisited and a revised amendment has been developed in consultation with industry.. Currently, there is an ever increasing dependence on foreign suppliers for raw material and this, coupled with structural changes within the Canadian industry, changes in marketing strategies and customer demands, as well as a trend toward less salty and more "value added" salted fish products, make the existing regulations obsolete.

A surge of interest in ornamental fish has prompted the Sea Grant Extension Program and College of Veterinary Medicine at Oregon State University to set up one of the nation’s few Extension programs dedicated to support of this growing industry.. The program's activities are rapidly expanding, ranging from individual advice to people about their sick guppy to work with the ornamental fish industry, research on disease management issues, consultation with retailers and veterinarians, and creation of new educational and outreach programs.. there have always been many people who keep tropical and other ornamental fish, and now we're just seeing an explosion of interest in outdoor ponds and the koi industry, " Miller-Morgan said.
