Each year, up to 250 salmon and sea trout migrate through the fish pass to spawn in the 20km of nursery streams that lie upstream.. The new improvement works, which included the redesign and modification of internal structures, will increase the numbers of fish that use the pass each year.. Afon Merddwr is one of the major tributaries of the Afon Conwy that lies upstream of the fish pass.. I was impressed to see for myself the scale of the Conwy Falls Fish Pass and the technology that controls it.. I was struck by how this contrasted with the work done on the Merddwr upstream where the combination of traditional and modern countryside skills are being used to restore the river so that fish and other wildlife thrive.” Julian Bray, Sustainable Fisheries Project Manager for the Agency in North Wales, said: “Ultimately the work carried out at the Conwy Falls fish pass and the Afon Merddwr will help maximise the number of salmon and sea trout that the River Conwy can produce.
