Fish Oils: The Essential Nutrients
Fish oils help prevent heart disease, depression and cancer.. A comprehensive review of the many health benefits of fish oils.. Fish Oils: The Essential Nutrients by Hans R.. Omega-3 acids are found in flaxseed oil, walnut oil, and marine plankton and fatty fish.. The main component of flaxseed and walnut oils is alpha-linolenic acid while the predominant fatty acids found in fatty fish and fish oils are eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA).. More recent research has established that fish oils (EPA and DHA) play a crucial role in the prevention of atherosclerosis, heart attack, depression, and cancer.. Clinical trials have shown that fish oil supplementation is effective in the treatment of many disorders including rheumatoid arthritis, diabetes, ulcerative colitis, and Raynaud's disease.. A high intake of fish has been linked to a significant decrease in age-related memory loss and cognitive function impairment and a lower risk of developing Alzheimer's disease.

. Comment in: Prenatal methylmercury exposure from ocean fish consumption in the Seychelles child development study.. The most common form of prenatal exposure is maternal fish consumption, but whether such exposure harms the fetus is unknown.. We aimed to identify adverse neurodevelopmental effects in a fish-consuming population.. Mothers reported consuming fish on average 12 meals per week.. Fish in Seychelles contain much the same concentrations of MeHg as commercial ocean fish elsewhere.. INTERPRETATION: These data do not support the hypothesis that there is a neurodevelopmental risk from prenatal MeHg exposure resulting solely from ocean fish consumption.
Omega-3 fatty acids, fish oil, alpha-linolenic acid - MayoClinic.com
Omega-3 fatty acids, fish oil, alpha-linolenic acid Natural Standard® Patient Monograph, Copyright © 2006 .. ARTICLE SECTIONS Background Dietary sources of omega-3 fatty acids include fish oil and certain plant/nut oils.. Fish oil contains both docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) and eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), while some nuts (English walnuts) and vegetable oils (canola, soybean, flaxseed/linseed, olive) contain alpha-linolenic acid (ALA).. There is evidence from multiple large-scale population (epidemiologic) studies and randomized controlled trials that intake of recommended amounts of DHA and EPA in the form of dietary fish or fish oil supplements lowers triglycerides, reduces the risk of death, heart attack, dangerous abnormal heart rhythms, and strokes in people with known cardiovascular disease, slows the buildup of atherosclerotic plaques ("hardening of the arteries"), and lowers blood pressure slightly.. Some species of fish carry a higher risk of environmental contamination, such as with methylmercury.

It reinforces advice to eat one portion of white fish and one portion of oily fish every week Sir Charles George, British Heart Foundation The findings add to growing evidence that eating oily fish or taking fish oil supplements reduce the risks of this happening.. Daily supplements The patients were divided into three groups and were asked to take either omega-3 fish-oil capsules, sunflower-oil capsules or a dummy capsule six times a day.. They found that there were far fewer inflammatory cells in the plaques of patients who had taken the omega-3 fish oil capsules.. He suggested that people should eat more oily fish or take fish-oil supplements.. "Increasing their intake of omega-3 fatty acids simply by eating more oily fish or taking fish oil capsules can reduce their risk of heart-related death." | You are in: Thursday, 31 May, 2001, 22:56 GMT 23:56 UK Fatty fish 'cut cancer risk' Eating mackerel may be good for you Eating fatty fish such as salmon, herring, and mackerel could reduce the risk of developing prostate cancer.. Essential fatty acids - especially omega-3 fatty acids contained in large amounts in fatty fish - have previously been proved to inhibit the growth of prostate cancer cells.. The researchers found that the men who ate no fish had a two to three-fold higher risk of prostate cancer than those who ate moderate or high amounts.. Lead researcher Dr Paul Terry said: "Our study was done in Sweden, a country with traditionally high consumption of fatty fish from Northern (cold) waters, which contain high amounts of omega-3 fatty acids.. "It also provides encouragement that eating fish is a practical thing men can do to help lower their own risk of prostate cancer." Dr Toy said it was vital that both men and women ate a healthy, balanced diet as it can help reduce the risk of cancer and other serious diseases.

Health Encyclopedia
. Interest in the potential therapeutic benefits of omega-3 fatty acids began when studies of the Inuit (Eskimo) people found that although their diets contain an enormous amount of fat from fish, seals, and whales, they seldom suffer heart attacks.. Subsequent investigation found that the omega-3 fatty acids found in fish oil have various effects that tend to reduce risk of heart disease and strokes.. However, research into whether use of fish oil actually prevents these diseases, while somewhat positive, remains incomplete and somewhat inconsistent.. In recognition of this, the FDA has allowed supplements containing fish oil or its constituents to carry a label that states: "Supportive but not conclusive research shows that consumption of EPA and DHA omega-3 fatty acids may reduce the risk of coronary heart disease." Fish oil has also shown promise as an anti-inflammatory treatment for conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis, menstrual pain, and lupus.. Some manufacturers add vitamin E to fish oil capsules to keep the oil from becoming rancid.
