I’m stoned by this superb example of how still today is possible to play a raw kind of Black Metal but with an original and personal touch. When I heard about Ex Caliga I was waiting for another ordinary band but this one is a very different matter. If it’s necessary to give a more general explanation Ex Caliga play a sort of very dark, nocturnal music, with strong traditional Black Metal elements but also other somber elements, like a sort of old-style version of the experimental sensations of Dodheimsgard, so that the result is something superb. It’s not only the usual screaming but a sick schizoid voice, madness included., the guitars are a mix of melodic lines in a very cold context. The feeling as I was saying is something very nocturnal, contorted but not nervous, but fortunately the drums have their numbers, contributing to keep high the attention.

I warmly suggest to try this band because they have shown a straight way to overcame the limits of hyper-traditional Black Metal without changing to much but underlining obscure aspects, summoning sensations and moods on the line with its more spiritual essence and supremacy, it’s obvious that they are far away from the typical and primitive blasphemy, very different. It’s quite interesting to hear those tunes and step by step the quality doesn’t drop. Millenium is not known for its continuity with the band, just think to past examples like Isvind and Perished but I hope that this time there will be a new chapter. I also need to mention the great cover, a dark fusion of exotic mysticism and lunar shadows .
