GRIFFAR- OF WITCHES AND CELTS
This
is the typical Black Metal album that I appreciate because it’s so back to the
roots in a very emotive way, riffs played with roughness and a primitive
recording but with a damn great feeling, melodies done in a extreme surrounding
that have nothing nice but like a blade they epically rip the listener. This
great French have more than one element in common with the sadly spited band
Hirilorn, in fact they play long songs created on evocative and majestic riffs
strongly recalling the Nordic-Scandinavian side of traditional Black Metal.
Griffar aggression have almost nothing in common with an "in your
face" recording, they prefer to go to colder and remorseless solutions.
"Of Witches.." is the typical dark saga, the cover is finally an
answer to those horrible computer-graphic tendencies of today, it’s a piece of
art, like an ancient picture, right expression of those French night-spirits. I
have to mention an excellent songs, "The Sanctuary of Cursed Warriors",
a long song that surely don’t risk to bore, a mix of cruel and monumental
Black Metal riffs and stops done by superb sombre arpeggios that can sometimes
be related to Ancient’s "Svartalvheim".
I strongly recommend this album to all those who have ice-cold Black essence in
their vein.
