SETH - DIVINE X
Seth are one of the few
bands that connect the regularity of the extreme metal with an avantgarde vein
on the sound, arrangements and ideas that deserve a great attention.
After the discussed "L'Excellence" and the Faucon Noir's split after
the recording of that album Seth, with the new singer Arkames, give to our
attention this new work, by the controversial name of "Divine X", the
condemn of the abstract divinities cult and the consciousness of the god
self-created inside the intelligent and sage man.
The album start with a keyboard alienator introduction till with surprise the
Alsvind's drumming brake-on beating the rhythm of the astonishing "Evil
X", a song supported by superb drum parts and by a clear recording, present
in al the album. Arkames' voice alternates between a black metal screaming and
spoken parts, sick and provocative. The second "Son of Seth" is for me
an hymn to themselves, with a very violent groovy grind-tempo mixed with a
thrash riffing, interrupted by and arpeggio to prepare the final assault, with a
very strong inclination for experimentation on the melodies and sounds. "Walk
on Fire With Me" have the personality of this band and other death-metal
elements, together with psychotic keyboards created by the geniality of the
guitarist Heimoth, that cover the honour of those and other effects. A
melancholic arpeggio open the fabulous "Sychotropic Angeldust" that
alternate fast outbursts to other more reflexives and sombre moments, ending to
be on of my preferred songs. A suffocating fog lives on "Cosmic Cursed's
Shelter", much more mid-tempo oriented and supported by guitar parts that
reminds to the fathers Emperor. The disturbing "Sphere of Spirituality",
singed in French, develop with melodies that have something to share with
Swedish melodic death metal, with an alternation of slow evocative parts and
"butchery" moments supported by thrashy parts! "Satanik
Generation" is introduced by an icy psychedelic sound that is followed by
an arpeggio supported with a great leg-work of the drummer, becoming a song with
an old-style feeling, deformed by interesting electronic effects, that are very
original and dynamic. The album end with the superb "Divine-X", a song
with some moderate Swedish-black influences, enriched by great riffs and
keyboards melodies, played with more conventional sounds, differently from the
other songs, but everything is changed by "dirty" and strange
synthetic effects.
The work can count of a very high quality level, that will capture the attention
of those who are searching for the musical avantgarde without forgive their past.
An excellent album!
