WINDIR - 1184
Third
release for this not well-known band coming from the north of Norway. After two
quite good albums Windir has realized this "1184" in which we can hear
again the sound of ancient waves of viking age. The choice of the title returns
to the Middle Age, in the year in which there was a battle between two kings to
the conquest of the Norwegian throne. So the atmosphere contains a war-side in
the energy of the riffs...it seems to see the soldiers ready to fight, but
Windir are able even to describe through their epic music the atmosphere of the
age of that period. Open landscapes and ecstatic visions will bring you into the
epic recall of "1184" an album full of pathos. Some parts look like to
the last Epicisim of the other epic band Borknagar, but here the epic vein
prevails in all its beauty. Well, there is a lack of imagination and originality
to make this album a masterpiece but it remains a good work. In the future
Windir could become a point of strength of the actual epic black metal scene
when too many bands are climbing the mountain of celebrity but the path looks
to seem very hard. The quality of sound is very good and some songs are
really catchy but there's the lack of something transcendental to transform
simple music in mysticism. Don't loose this age of ruin...
