Hypnotic,
melodic and purposely extreme Ulan Bator make music similar to sound
tracks for feature films that still need to be written and shot.
The recording of this French trioís new album ìEgo:Echoî
took place during a burning hot summer in Florence, Italy, with
New York producer and legendary underground composer, Michael Gira.
The striking difference in respect to Ulan Batorís previous albums
is the fact the voice is up front and a lot of work has gone into
the arrangements giving a fluidity to the varying hypnotic atmospheres
within the album.
With this their fourth album, Ulan Bator have reached a musical
maturity recognised and acclaimed by music critics and fans throughout
Europe with many music magazines voting ìEgo:Echoî as their album
of the month and the most important album released to date this
year. Their previous three albums; ìUlan Batorî (1995) ì2 Degreesî
(1996) and ìVegetaleî (1998) were released on the french label Les
Disques Du Soleil Et De LíAcier. The group, made up of guitarist
/ singer Amaury Cambuzat and bass player Olivier Manchion are now
accompanied by drummer Matteo Dainese (Meathead, Here).
From their first release Ulan Bator received a true plebicite of
compliments from the french music press and the international music
press caught on soon after with american magazine Alternative Press
(No. 100) recognizing Ulan Bator as the only French band worthy
of note and the album ì2 Degreesî was elected one of the magazineís
albums of the year.
After touring all of Europe during 1998, including two memorable
concerts with the legendary german group Faust, Ulan Bator spent
1999 concentrated on the composition and creation of their fourth
album ìEgo:Egoî.
Their first three albums were recorded and produced by the group
however for this new work the band decided to work for the first
time with an external artistic producer.
The band has always been huge admirers of the american group the
Swans and through their label, SonicaFactory, (Italy) the group
contacted Michael Gira ex-singer of the Swans who immediately demonstrated
enthusiasm and interest in the project. Gira and Ulan Bator spent
three weeks recording and mixing ìEgo:Echoî at the Sonicafactory
Studios on the outskirts of Florence, Italy, and following the excellent
final result, the album will be released in Canada and the United
States through Giraís record label, Young God Records in contemporary
with itís release in Italy through Virgin and in France through
Les Disques Du Soleil Et De LíAcier.
