21/1/73 - MY FATHERS PLACE, ROSLYN, NY

Set details unknown. Two shows on the night. Bruce and the band's first-ever appearance at this Long Island club and they arrive in a commercial-sized Greyhound Bus (probably rented due to the 1,500km journey to Chicago that immediately followed), filled with girlfriends, roadies and assorted other inner circle troops.

Bruce is opening for headliner The Paul Winter Consort, a group specializing in quiet, India-influenced "jazz" music. Both shows are sellouts but it's a terrible clash of musical and audience styles with, as one witness has described, "50 partying Asbury Park hippies dancing on chairs and 350 middle aged suburbanites trying to meditate".

My Father's Place manager Michael Epstein had booked Springsteen in late 1972 (unknown, unheard and unseen) because the club's owner had a son who was married to Mike Appel's sister. Epstein had been told on the phone by Appel that Bruce was a folk singer, so he was expecting just a guy with just an acoustic guitar. Epstein has commented; "it was the worst show I ever packaged….I seem to remember much of the audience being in a catatonic state…."I was astounded at the magic of Springsteen.…Paul Winter never spoke to me again".

Traditionally shown on timeline lists as a multi-day residency at the club. Yet recollections strongly point to this debut appearance at the club as being a one-night stand only. Bruce would however return to My Father's Place on 31 / 7 / 73 for a triumphant 4-night, 8-show stand - as headliner.

24/1/73 - THE QUIET KNIGHT CLUB, CHICAGO, ILL

No set details known. Yet another weeklong residency, which seems to have been the norm during the early stages of the "Greetings" tour. No details known, probably 2 separate admission shows per night.

The opening night of an important multi-day residency for Bruce. Two shows are performed each night. Bruce is opening all week for headliner Biff Rose. As the opening act Bruce's shows are limited to about 60 minutes.

By pre-arrangement DIR Broadcasting Corp is on hand this night to gather performance recordings in preparation for the launch of its new syndicated radio show, King Biscuit Flower Hour. CBS has negotiated with DIR Broadcasting for the debut King Biscuit show to exclusivey feature artists from the CBS family. Springsteen is but one of several CBS artists DIR records during late 72 and early 73 for this purpose. With the permission and cooperation of Laurel Canyon Productions, DIR engineers audio record Springsteen's entire early show plus the opening "solo" segment of the late show. The "band" segment of the late show was NOT recorded. DIR retain the Master Tape and the 1st generation copy of the Master is sent to Laurel Canyon. The above-mentioned track listing represents everything that was professionally recorded on this night. No audience recording from this night is known.

King Biscuit Flower Hour used a 2 - 4 week delayed broadcast formula. The debut program was broadcast on Feb 18th and Feb 19th, 1973. The 60-minute show featured performances by Blood Sweat & Tears, The Mahavishnu Orchestra and Bruce. The other two acts were, at that time, much better known. So it is not surprising that only one Springsteen song ("Bishop Dance") was utilized during this show. This is also the version of "Bishop Dance" that was released on the official TRACKS box set, although the session information mistakenly identifies the recording date as the broadcast date - just one of many detailing errors found in the TRACKS liner notes.

Although "Bishop Dance" was re-broadcast by King Biscuit several times in subsequent years, none of the other material was ever broadcast, due to rights issues. King Biscuit Flower Hour still retains the original Master Tape in its archives. On their Master Tape reel "Saga Of The Architect Angel" is mistaken titled "John Wayne". The company has repeatedly sought (and been declined) permission to commercially release the full 8-song performance as part of its ongoing archive CD reissue series. Fortunately we do have the material via the unofficial route.

The entire, unedited performance from the early show can be found in excellent quality on the CD boot "LIVE AT MAX'S KANSAS CITY" (Swingin' Pig). This CD also has the two tracks from the second show but, inexplicably, the recording of "Song To Orphans" is only half complete. The complete recording of "Song To Orphans" from this show can be either found on the CD "THE UNSURPASSED SPRINGSTEEN" VOL 1" or the CD "THE UNSURPASSED SPRINGSTEEN VOL 2".

The recordings of "Bishop Dance" and "Thundercrack" from this show were utilized for copyright reference and publishing purposes by Laurel Canyon Music. In doing so Laurel Canyon professionally edited the long, rambling 11:30 recording of "Thundercrack" down to a slicker, more focused 6:50 running time. The song is edited in three places, with the major edit completely eliminating the middle "comedy break" routine. It is this edited version that was distributed (on tape or acetate) to various industry people during the period, most notably Intersong Music in the UK. This edited version of "Thundercrack" was one of the earliest booted Springsteen recordings and can be found on the mid-70's LP boot "FIRE ON THE FINGERTIPS". Enhanced sound specimens of this long-circulating edited version of "Thundercrack" can be found in more recent times on CD boots "FORGOTTEN SONGS", "UNSURPASSED SPRINGSTEEN VOL 2" and, most recently, "DEEP DOWN IN THE VAULTS" (which falsely credits the performance as 5/1/74 at Joe's Place).

At one time or another ALL the recordings from 31/1/73 have been incorrectly attributed (typically via liner notes on boots) to Springsteen's 30/8/72 show at Max's Kansas City. Please refer to Brucebase's 30/8/72 listing for information on recordings that are currently circulating from that show. Lastly, a version of "Vibes Man" is often linked to this either of these shows. This is in fact the 1972 studio demo that has had audience clapping crudely dubbed onto the end of it. Even though this hoax was done by a bootlegger way back in the 1970's, it continues to turn up on releases. There is no genuine live version of "Vibes Man" known.

3/2/73 - MAX'S KANSAS CITY, NEW YORK, NY

Set details unknown. Two shows. Bruce and the band open for headliner Biff Rose. As he was the night before, David Bowie is in the audience, although the two aren't introduced to each other. In Musician magazine in 1987 Bowie commented on these shows at Max's - "I hated him as a solo.…as soon as the band came on it was like a different person and he was marvelous.…I like the Asbury Park (LP) material, my favorite period of Springsteen is the early stuff". Postscript: In June 1973 Bowie would be the first artist to record (though not release) a Bruce composition (Growin' Up).

14/4/73 - RICHMOND, VA

MARY QUEEN OF ARKANSAS / FOR YOU / DOES THIS BUS STOP / ROSALITA inc FUN FUN FUN

Audience tape - recently circulating. Bruce is clearly opening for another band which is unknown at present. This may be the wrong date. Interesting setlist with the earliest known Rosalita, which strangly does not reappear on any tape until January 1974. It is possible that this tape is one of the support shows for the Beach Boys - see 7 &11/4/73 above.

18/4/73 - CHRISTIAN BROTHERS ACADAMY, LINCROFT, NJ

No setlist details known. One show. Bruce and the band headline. Support act is SATAN'S JURY, a local horn-based rock outfit. This is the only known appearance by Springsteen with The E Street Band at a high school venue (a high school concert was planned for 25/5/74, but cancelled).

23/4/73 - SHABOO, WILLIMANTIC, CT

Two seperate admission shows performed. A reader writes "As I remember it was mostly a wooden single story structure with many pictures of all the artists that performed there over the years on the walls and poles inside. It was a great place to catch upcoming bands and a fun bar to drink at. The Shaboo sadly burnt down about 20 years ago" Editors note "Shaboo Inn was one of those large but quaint New England-styled hotels, located out in the Connecticut countryside. The building had originally been constructed as a silk mill in the 1800's. It was made entirely of wood. The fire that completely destroyed the place was in August 1982. Many great acts played at Shaboo Inn (who usually included nice rooms and meals for the artists) and the place had a significant photo/memorabilia collection (like a Hard Rock Café) - all of it lost in the fire."

24/4/73 - THE MAIN POINT, BRYNE MAWR,PA

NEW YORK SONG (5.14)/ CIRCUS STORY (4.58)/ SPIRIT IN THE NIGHT (5.02)/ DOES THIS BUS STOP? (4.30)/ HEY SANTA ANNA (5.12)/ TOKOYO (7.03)/ THUNDERCRACK (13.23)

Broadcast in the Philadelphia area - so excellent quality tapes are available. Two seperate admission shows performed. The available tape includes the story on draft avoidance, which is quite amusing. Available on LP "The Jersey Devil" (HAR) and CD "Thundercrack" (Great Dane) "And The Band Played" (Lobster) "Smalltown Boy" (Swingin' Pig)

25/4/73 - THE MAIN POINT, BRYN MAWR,PA

TWO shows, 8PM and 10PM. Bruce and the band headline. Support act is folk duo AZTEC TWO-STEP.

27/4/73 - OHIO UNIVERSITY MUSIC FESTIVAL, ATHENS, OH

Set details unknown. A fairly impressive 9-artist roster with Bruce and the band receiving near bottom billing. They play early on the first day of this 2-day festival held indoors at the school's Convocation Center. The Eagles co-headline. Eagle Don Henley has commented on this show: "I'd first heard about Springsteen from Jackson (Browne), who raved about him. Then we ended up on the same bill as Bruce at a festival out in Ohio. So I sort of wandered in alone and checked out his set. He was just a warm-up act at that this show. After watching him I remember thinking to myself that this was a guy that wasn't gonna be warming up the crowd for us - or for anybody - for very long".

28/4/73 - UNIVERSITY OF MARYLAND, COLLEGE PARK, MD

SPIRIT IN THE NIGHT / DOES THIS BUS STOP AT 82ND ST / BLINDED BY THE LIGHT / THUNDERCRACK…….then, as Chuck Berry's backing band…MAYBELLENE / ROCK AND ROLL MUSIC / SCHOOL DAY / ROLL OVER BEETHOVEN / NADINE / NO PARTICULAR PLACE TO GO / SWEET LITTLE SIXTEEN / MY DING-A-LING / REELIN' AND ROCKIN' / JOHNNY B GOODE

Triple bill featuring Springsteen, Jerry Lee Lewis and Chuck Berry - a show now steeped in mystique. Chuck Berry's contract stipulated that it was the promoter's responsibility to supply Chuck with a backing band for this concert. Apparently Bruce learned several days before the show that the promoter was seeking a group to support Berry - and immediately volunteered his band's services for free - which the promoter gladly accepted. Berry was not involved in the decision. Bruce and the boys opened their part of the show with a 60-minute set, followed by Jerry Lee and his band, who also performed for about an hour. Chuck Berry (with the entire E Street Band backing him, including Bruce) closed the evening's festivities with a 70-minute performance. There was no rehearsal or soundcheck with Berry, so Bruce and the boys improvised as best they could. Springsteen recounts the hilarious details in the Berry bio-film "Hail, Hail Rock & Roll".

The above represents a partial setlist from Bruce's opening slot (there were probably 3 or 4 additional songs played) but it does represent most of setlist from Chuck Berry & The E Street Band's performance. THERE IS NO KNOWN TAPE OF ANY OF THIS MATERIAL. This sold out gig in the 5,500-seat Cole Field House was not without some controversy. Such was the demand to see the show that 20 people were arrested for breaking and entering after police caught individuals sneaking into the concert via an open female lavatory window at the back of the building. However 200-300 people made it in before the police caught wind of what was going on.

29/4/73 - PENN STATE UNIVERSITY, UNIVERSITY PARK, PA

No details known. This concert was originally scheduled for 1/5/73. However Springsteen's last-minute inclusion in the CBS-sponsored Ahmanson Theater show in Los Angeles forced this Penn State concert to be re-scheduled. The problem is that nobody seems able to verify when the rescheduled performance took place! BRUCEBASE has placed the rescheduled show as 29/4/73 - the only possible nearby open date given Bruce's known travel schedule. However it is possible that the Penn State University gig on 7/9/73 was the rescheduled date for this show.

1/5/73 - AHMANSON THEATRE, LOS ANGELES, CA

SPIRIT IN THE NIGHT / CIRCUS SONG / TOKYO / THUNDERCRACK / TWIST AND SHOUT

The above is the complete setlist from this show. Only the audio of "Circus Song" (which was issued promotionally) is currently circulating. Often incorrectly described as a "CBS Sales Convention" show (see listing on 27/7/73 for the actual CBS Convention) - this gig at the Ahmanson was in fact a normal public paid admission event. The format was unusual however. Organized and billed by CBS as "A Week To Remember" - 7 consecutive nightly shows, each show featuring 3 different CBS artists. Bruce and the band fly to L.A. on April 30th and stay at the LA Hilton. They fly back east on May 3rd.

Springsteen performs at the 3rd show, on May 1st. They are the opening act of the evening and are followed by Dr Hook & The Medicine Show and then headliners, New Riders Of The Purple Sage. The 2000 seat venue is a sellout due to the two other acts - Bruce is virtually unknown to the LA audience. His performance receives mixed response at best from a crowd coming to see country rock stalwarts.

Bruce plays piano on "Spirit In The Night". "Tokyo" is preceeded by the long "Ducky Slatery Gas Station" monologue. At the conclusion of "Thundercrack" a giant Asbury Park Turnpike sign descends from the the back of the stage - the only time this prop was ever utilized. (see photo below) "Twist And Shout" is performed as an encore.

All 7 shows in the Ahmanson series were recorded by CBS and professionally filmed in colour by Arnold Levine Productions on behalf of CBS, whose intent was to show the performances at the CBS Sales Convention in July. This did indeed happen - Bruce's entire perfomance was shown several times at the Convention - but has never been shown anwhere since. The entire video definitely survives to this day - in CBS's archives. It has still yet to leak out to collectors.

Very brief film snippits of "Circus Song" and "ThunderCrack" were used by CBS as part of a promo-only video clip put together by the company in late 1973 to promote the newly released "Wild & Innocent" LP. This promo spot video circulates amoung collectors (and indeed was shown in the VH1 Rockumentary). The very brief colour film snippit of Bruce performing "Spirit In The Night" on piano in the 1998 BBC Documentary "Bruce Springsteen - A Secret History" is from this show as well.

The recording of "Circus Song" from this show is released by CBS on July 7, 1973 on the promotion-only 7" CBS Playback EP.

5/5/73 - PROVIDENCE COLLEGE, PROVIDENCE, RI

No set list details known. Bruce and the band headline the school's "Spring Carnival" concert.

6/5/73 - UNIVERSITY OF MASSACHUSETTS, AMHURST, MASS

Set details unknown. One show and yet another gig held as part of a school's "Spring Carnival" festivities - Springsteen seemed to be in demand for such events. A rare daytime-outdoor performance, held in the University's expansive Alumni Stadium, making this one of the biggest venues Bruce and the band performed in during the entire 1970's.

11/5/73 - OHIO STATE UNIVERSITY, COLUMBUS, OH

No details known

12/5/73 - NIAGARA UNIVERSITY, LEWISTON, NY

No details known

16/5/73 - MINNESOTA STATE UNIVERSITY, MANKATO, MINN

Set details unknown. An all day, outdoor music festival capping off the school's Spring Carnival festivities. This is a show to raise funds for the local Native American "Little Crow Scholarship Fund". There are 8 bands on a card headlined by Azteca, a Santana-styled group that, like Bruce, has a recent debut LP out on CBS. Springsteen has 2nd billing. Note: Bruce and the band's presence here calls into question the May 16th New York recording date attributed to "The Fever" in the official 18 TRACKS CD.

26/5/73 - CHILDE HAROLD, WASHINGTON, DC

Bruce and the band have sole billing. One show with two sets.

27/5/73 - CHILDE HAROLD, WASHINGTON, DC

28/5/73 - CHILDE HAROLD, WASHINGTON, DC

Bruce and the band have sole billing. One show with two sets.

30/5/73 - CUMBERLAND COUNTY CIVIC CENTRE, FAYETTEVILLE, NC

45 minute set. Bruce and the band are opening act for headliners, Chicago

31/5/73 - ALPHA STUDIOS (WGOE) RICHMOND, VA

SATIN DOLL (1.10)/ DOES THIS BUS STOP? (4.54) / WILD BILLY'S CIRCUS STORY (4.58)/ GROWIN UP (3.18)/ NEW YORK CITY SERENADE (5.34)/ YOU MEAN SO MUCH TO ME (6.39)

Broadcast by Richmond's WGOE-FM live via remote hook-up from an actual recording studio - the only time Springsteen ever did it this way (all other radio shows were merely recorded inside the DJ broadcast room). WGOE paid for the studio time. Besides the WGOE DJ, the small audience heard inside the studio with the band includes Mike Appel, Jim Cretecos and David Sancious! After the show Mike Appel took possession of the Master Tape.

The recording of "You Mean So Much To Me" from this show was one of the 27 songs cut from the official TRACKS box set when it was culled from a 6CD set down to a 4CD set. Fortunately a beautiful transfer of this song off the master tape has since leaked out and can be found on the CD boot "Deep Down In The Vaults". The remainder of this show is available but in significantly weaker (but still enjoyable) sound quality - some tracks are on "Radio Waves" CD (GDR).

45 minute set. Bruce and the band are opening act for headliners, Chicago

6/6/73 - THE SPECTRUM, PHILADELPHIA, PA

Abbreviated 30 minute set. Bruce and the band are opening act for headliners, Chicago. Springsteen is booed loudly by the impatient, obviously partisan Chicago crowd - the only known time in his entire career where he has been seriously booed by an audience. Some further, quite amusing information was submitted by a reader "I was at the June 6th concert where he was booed at the Spectrum in Philadelphia. It was the subject of conversation at two radio stations when I told them my story. I also told them that when the crowd kept booing, Bruce just kept singing while waving his middle finger back and forth at the crowd. Although at the time I agreed that he couldn't sing, (even though I didn't like him at that concert, I became a BIG fan later and whenever I told anyone that story of him being booed, no one believed me.) I felt extremely embarrased and felt very bad for the group on stage. He really did flip and wave the finger." Thanks to Chuck for that.

8/6/73 - THE GARDENS, BOSTON, MASS

45 minute set. Bruce and the band are opening act for headliners, Chicago

9/6/73 - THE GARDENS, BOSTON, MASS

GROWIN' UP

45 minute set. Bruce and the band are opening act for headliners, Chicago. A fan present recalls "I dont recall which night (I was at), all I know is he led off with just himself at the piano for Growin Up the announcer introduced this new act from New Jersey over the piano. It was the only unknown act I have ever seen completely steal the show from the main event. He was good enough that I searched for his album for weeks until I found it." Thanks to Richard.

Audience Tape - Phantoms is a very early Zero & Blind Terry with different lyrics (also known as "Over The Hills Of St Croix") and Secret .. is a version of Bands Just Boppin' The Blues from Steel Mill days. Only known version of Take Me Out... Very average quality but an important show. The tape appears to run fast and may be incomplete. (This tape appears on lists as 12/6/73)

15/6/73 - MADISON SQUARE GARDEN, NEW YORK

45 minute set. Bruce and the band are opening act for headliners, Chicago. The final gig on the "Chicago tour". After the show a dispirited Bruce tells Appel he doesn't want to play big auditorium's again - and he sticks to his word for a LONG time thereafter.

Set details unknown. David Sancious's first public performance as a member of the band. This and the following two nights shows were held at the Hamilton Avenue venue in the city (i.e. "Fat City"). SANTA ANNA / ZERO AND BLIND TERRY

TWO shows, 8PM and 10PM. Bruce and the boys are the sole act on the bill. However, a demo reel box that was sent to radio stations contained three songs, Bishop Danced, Santa Anna and Zero and Blind Terry. Bishop Danced is the version that was broadcast and that is on Unsurpassed Vol. 2. Santa Anna at 5:10 and Zero at 7:40 are different than any other versions of these songs in existence on any other tapes or boots that I know of. The additional music on Zero is a Growin' Up sort of segment between "fought on through the night" and "well now some folks say Zero and Terry got away". It's the best version I've heard. Backstreets auctioned two copies of this a few years ago. It is assumed that these tracks may come from one of the Main Point shows in this time frame as while The Zero And Blind Terry track is later than the "Phantoms" early version (see 13/6/73), it is not in the final form we hear at the Max's Shows later in July (see 18/7/73).

18/7/73 - MAX'S KANSAS CITY, NEW YORK, NY

SPIRIT IN THE NIGHT / NEW YORK CITY SERENADE / ROUTE 66

Full set details unknown, although the above-mentioned three songs were played. Opening night of week's residency with Bruce and the band co-headlining with another emerging legend, BOB MARLEY & THE WAILERS. There is one show per night, with Marley opening and Springsteen closing on each of the nights. Each act plays for about 90 minutes each night. This is Bob Marley & The Wailers first-ever US tour and their much-anticipated debut in New York City. Virtually all the 300 tickets to the opening show were given out to press and industry insiders, most of who were attending specifically to check out Marley, not Springsteen. After the Marley show (which started over an hour late) a substantial majority of the audience departs, leaving Bruce and the band to play to about 50 people.

At some point during the show Bruce starts taking requests from the audience. "Route 66" is performed on the request of Stereo Review critic Steve Simels, who to this day calls it the best rendition of the song he's ever heard. The last known performance of "Route 66" had been during Springsteen's gigs at The Backdoor Club in February 1972. Simels has also commented that Bruce opened the show with "Spirit In The Night". As would be the case for almost every show during this residency, Marley and his band turn up to Max's late and then take a long time to get ready to play - which caused minor friction between the Marley and Springsteen camps. As a result there was little, if any, interaction (either social or musical) between the two acts during the entire week. However both artists gave consistently outstanding performances every night. All remaining shows were sellouts and, unlike opening night aberration, the paying customers came primarily to watch Springsteen.

NEW YORK CITY SERENDADE / 4TH JULY ASBURY PARK (SANDY) / SPIRIT IN THE NIGHT / DOES THIS BUS STOP? / SOMETHING YOU GOT / ZERO AND BLIND TERRY / THUNDERCRACK

One show. Marley & The Wailers open. Springsteen & The E Street Band close. Nils Lofgen attends this final show. Miami Steve also attended a show, as did Lou Reed. Garland Jefferies came to five shows. This very good quality audience recording may be from this show or it may be from any one of the other nights - nobody seems to know for sure. It is unlikely to be from the opening night because the audio evidence suggests a full house and the opening night wasn't.

27/7/73 - CBS ANNUAL SALES CONVENTION, SAN FRANCISCO, CA

4TH JULY ASBURY PARK (SANDY)/ ZERO AND BLIND TERRY / SAINT IN THE CITY / THUNDERCRACK

.This is Bruce's complete set list from the show. The CBS Sales Convention was an in-house, industry-only three day event. There were no tickets available for the public. Numerous artists in the CBS roster were scheduled to perform brief sets each evening. Each artist was supposed to perform two or three songs and be finished in 15 minutes. The artists were not paid, except for their travel related expenses.

This is the infamous CBS Sales Convention perfromance where Bruce was not very well received by many of the CBS reps and industry hacks in attendence. Bruce had the misfortune to come onstage following Edgar Winter's White Trash, who performed a visually spectacular, 15 minute set with pyrotechics and smoke bombs - which the partying CBS reps loved.

Bruce's performance, on the other hand, was low-key and without props or frills. "Sandy" was performed solo acoustic. Bruce performed for 45 minutes, which further upset many at CBS who felt Springsteen was grandstanding on the night. Springsteen did not want to come to California to do this show and essentially had to be ordered to come. To quote John Hammond, who was Bruce biggest supporter at who was in attendance, "Bruce came onstage with a chip on his shoulder and played WAY too long".

The film of Bruce's perfromance on 1/5/73 at the Ahmanson Theatre was shown at this Convention - the only time it's ever been shown to date.

First of a four night stand with two shows per night. Radio Broadcast on WLIR. First known available live version of Saint In The City. Available on LP "My Fathers Place" & "With Ducks on his Wings" and on CD's "My fathers Place" (GDR) & "Jacksonville & My Father's Place" - the latter is better quality.

Joseph Bronowich, the Program Manager at The Jabberwocky during this period, has confirmed that this show as well as following two nights were cancelled. Apparantly Bruce was stuck in the studio with final mixing of the "Wild & Innocent" LP. The legendary Jabberwocky Club closed down in 1985.

Set details unknown. One show, with Bruce and the band the only act on the bill. Although an advertisement (see below) says the concert was scheduled for the University's Gymnasium, further information indicates the concert was ultimately relocated to the smaller, 500-seat Student Union Ballroom. There was free admission if you were a student at Stony Brook, although Bruce and the band were paid. Interestingly it is reported that Bruce had one of his guitars stolen at this gig.

6/10/73 - VILLANOVA UNIVERSITY, VILLANOVA, PA

90 Minute+ Set. Bruce and the band open for headliner, Jackson Browne, who also does a 90 Minute+ Set. This was the second time Bruce had opened for Browne (note: see 14/8/72 show listing) but the first - and only - time both artists ever gave full, scheduled performances on the same bill (i.e., excluding the later charity benefits). Set list is undocumented and there is no known tape of what Jackson Browne has recounted as "a magical night". Jackson has mentioned the Villanova gig with Springsteen at least twice in interviews. But on each occasion he has only stated the year, not the month. Therefore the possibility this was the 13/4/73 Villanova gig and not this 6/10/73 gig cannot be ruled out at this point - further research is needed to nail it down.

11/11/73 - TRENTON STATE COLLEGE, EWING, NJ

Although widely seen on concert timeline lists since the 1970's, research indicates no Springsteen concert took place at Trenton State (College Of New Jersey) on this date or during this period. However a Springsteen performance did take place at Trenton State College on 8/11/74 (see that BRUCEBASE listing for details). There is a possibility that the 11/11/73 venue location is incorrect but that there was indeed a Springsteen show on this date, somewhere else. However it's more likely that the two dates were mixed up years ago and that the error had gone unnoticed. Should any BRUCEBASE reader have any hard evidence we'd like to hear from you.

SANTA CLAUS IS COMING TO TOWN

One show, and a bit of a wild one at that. Tickets to this gig were $5 and included all the beer you could drink. Bruce and the band headline. The show starts late due to equipment problems. Then shortly after the performance begins there's another delay when a fight breaks out in the audience. Show includes the earliest known performance of "Santa Claus" yet reported. Often listed as an outdoor gig but was definitely held indoors, as you would expect in the middle of winter. Rova Farms was not a "farm", it was a congregation and function center operated by the local Russian Orthodox community.
