Dear Sir,
I have several Dinky toy cars, all well used and in need of restoring. Some have been painted but poorly.I shall appreciate learning about your methods, particularly regarding:

What paints do you use?, (Ive not had much sucess with aerosol paints).
How do you re-attached baseplates?
Do you have a method for restoring/polishing or re-creating plastic windows?
Do you have a source for obtaining original, or close to original decals.?
Your entire procedure and any pertinent advice you can offer.

Sincerely, George.

I live in Canada and have been collecting Dinky Toys for years and I enjoy repainting them myself for my own pleasure.

Holà Hector!
I am fond of old metal toys especially Dinky Toys. I used to play for hours with my fathers and uncles Dinkys when we visited our grandmother, but sadly she threw them away one day when she moved in a flat. But i still love her...
Now I have the project to search exactly the same models and built them up again. My idea is to buy objects in optical bad condition so that I can spend hours again with restauring them. My question to the expert; does a market of old battered models of late 40s to late 50s (especially camions out of the Swiss or English catalogues) exist, and if, on which sites.
Thanks alot!

Hola Daniel:
Gracias for your mail.

In fact all of us who loves Dinky really enjoy when watching catalogues, Internet, swaping, shopes and/or buying from somebody.

There are available excellent and professional restorers, spare parts, catalogues and accesories. Prices of chipped units in a good shape can be perfectly restored. ( See on my site) Later on the models can be lefted on the shelves
for permanent fun when seeing them.

Let me know if I can be anything to help you.

Hello Hector!

Thank you for your e-mail. I went surfing in the internet and I already found one Item, the nr 972 "coles 20ton crane" from a british collector.

This one doesnt need any restoration but there are many other models which are verry nice and need repaint!
By the way, what is the best way to remove the old (chipped) paint from the carbody in your opinion? I thaught of sand-based abrasion, but I am afraid that this could affect the carbody.

Best regards,

Daniel

I strong reccomend you to visit the following sites for restoration

this the one which describes perfectly how to do it
http://www.maestro.demon.nl/dtgall/dtgall.htm

this other offer the service with other description about the steps

I do not recomend the sand process.
It can destroy the surface unable to be restored later on. Prefered the chemical submerged process.

Let me know about your steps

By the way from where you are coming on ?

Hola' Hector:

Greetings from the West Coast of Canada.
What a pleasure it was to find your site and see another's passion for the toys. I restore mine as well as that is the most satisfying part of it.
to see the toy on the shelf and looking at the before and after pictures.
If I can get good condition toys at a fair price I do so, but I love to restore them. You can see my toys at my site www.sinanju.ca and follow the links to Dinky Toys. I also have some Corgi and collect ambulances and Mini Coopers
as well.
After dis-assembling the toy I use a low air pressure glass bead cabinet for stripping as I found chemical too messy. I then putty in any cracks with JB Weld epoxy steel and rebuild any missing window uprights or body damage with extra material I have from totally junked toys. I have a local source for replacement parts and I use Model Master paints with a Testor air brush sprayer. I have to mix the paints to get as close to original as I can and that is the biggest challenge. To re-attach the base plates I tap out the stem to 4-40 thread and use a 1/4 round head hex drive screw to fasten it back on. Looks not bad. Recently I have been experimenting with using JB Weld epoxy to form rivet heads and shape them after hardening. both methods are cheap and easy. I hope to get a picture directory of step by step instructions on my site soon. However I am always willing to try new methods developed by other collector / restorers.

I shall be checking back with your site from time to time. Best wishes to you and your family. I remain:
Sincerely
Cameron Bailey

Thankyou very much for your nice concepts.

I have visited and enjoyed very much your site. I can imagine How much you will enjoy restoring YOURSELF Dinkys. I have restored most of them but not with my proper hands. I really feel I wont how to do. I like to have them in good conditions. I am only a collector and the restoring have been performed by third parties.
The Master from Holland has performed five units at excellent final product.
I strong recomend his work. You can see by yourself on my site. Others with local restores (Dinky lovers)
Mind this. I have played when I was 8. I have played, painted, put my feets over them..submerged on the water, burned and other tortures.
I visited very nice shops in UK !! ( with high prices in GBP) but Mint conditions.

You make me think to have a DAta bank with Dinky pieces for anybody who wants to restore as you are. Other good is Aaron Recoveries.

I see the Foden you bought for 15 dollars. There are here any but you must pay between 30 or 40 dollars. Only for restoring.

Keep contacted: let me know about your progress in restoring and other events.
In Australia for $20. yearly they send you a Newsletter in paper about activities meetings, swaping etc.

P.S. I forget to tell you I agree with you the base plate is the worst.

Hi Teddy Maricq
Thankyou very much for your message.

I visited all your three sites.

I have deeeply enjoyed your Dinky Toys site. As you see I lek DT. Specially to those who retore and revive the old toy feeling from the 50s.

I just keep my toys from the 50s. I have destroyed them, put my feet over them. When 8 years old I tryed in a very poor manner to paint them with disastrous results. You can see some units before restoration. Those ones were originals. Some models would be worth to be in your gallery of horrors as you very original denominated it.

I enjoyed your fine restoration art. Congratulations. Its difficult today to find DToys. There are very few in my country. The Mints are in England.
Of course a very high prices. The wrecks are here. I bought sone week ago the 40a Riley I paid 18 euros.
Some times I use to buy someone. I like very much the trucks. I am looking for Guys 513 Flat and flat with tailboard. I you see any in good price let me know.

I will insert your address on the links area of my site. Would you mind to insert mine in your site ? My site was prepared for a good italian friend Giancarlo who is a great Dinky collector too !!

Keep in touch. Let me know from time to time once you prepared any new or restored one more.

Estimado Jose

Have fun collecting Dinky !!

Hola Jose
NO eran baratos. No estaban al alcance de cualquiera. Era como una especie de elite por llamarlo de alguna manera.

Bueno basta por hoy un cordial saludo de

Hi Hector
Argentine catalog came for the Bruce Baxter estate collection ~ the most famous NZ Meccano historian who died some years ago. He traded with collectors around the world to gather his collection.
Sorry no shop or website. Have been selling mail order for the past dozen or so years. Used to do a catalogue, now just Internet auctions.
Plenty of interesting Dinky literature to come from the Baxter
collection soon,

Cheers Nigel Boyle

Hi Hector,

I possess a number of dinky toys, that have to be restored. Can you tell me the way you did that? My questions are
- in what way did you remove the old paint
- how did you paint the dinkies in such a way that they seems as new?

Thanks in advance for your answer

Hello Berry
Thankyou very much for your mail.

I am deeply sorry to disappoint you. I am not a restorer. I just send my units to be restorer for the experts.
Or at least the craftmanships.

Note the the great one is very close to you in Amstelbeem. HIs name is Peter Van Der Craig. The Maestro.
He restored five units outstandingly good.
I strong recomend him.

Despite this you have to ways. Submerging them in chemical product see the site I hereby detail for you.
Or other is taking out by friction with very thin abrasive paper.
The first is most professional and the unit become absolutely clean.
the.maestro@maestro.demon.nl

The paint is the original. Aaron, Keith Harvie and others sell it. The final finishing is perfect. The sound os the dinkys when you run it sounds like brand new. Its amazing.
Local restorer use brush but Peter use Aerograph. See in the pictures they become very good.
Marron Rover, REd Foden, Blue Foden, Orange Forward Control and the Double decker bus were all restored by the same local person.
The mail van, the Rover blue and cream, Petrol tank, were restored by Peter.
I hope this will serve in any way. Please ask me for further assitance.
Have fun restoring Dinky Toys.

Hello David
Thankyou for your mail

Your model looks very good.

If you are aking how much it can be valued I should say rounding U$S300.-
Being original and almost Mint Box condition. Take a look on the Keith Harvie, Unique Collections or Great Finds on the Internet. There are offering this models on the range up to of GBP 300 (when MBoxed. They can buy your model.

Regarding the paint you must be very carefull with it. No to use chemical remover and besides the use of abrasives should be extremely carefull in order not to destroy the original paint on the doors.
Unfortunately I am not a restorer and cant help you. The most of my Dinkys restored were performed by thirds parties. The maestro from Holland and local restoreer here in Buenos Aires.

Do not hesitate to contact me whenever you need.

Best regards
