SOGGETTO Servono presentazioni per il Phantom? Credo che molti come me lo ritengano, assieme all'F-104, la quintessenza del velivolo militare. Massiccio, robusto, potente, versatile, generoso, tanto bello da far dimenticare d'essere una macchina per produrre morte. Esso rappresenta nei miei ricordi d'infanzia una presenza costante, quando sfrecciva nei cieli delle Dolomiti mentre ne percorrevo le vie ferrate su cui papà ci trascinava con entusiasmo, ed io pensavo: "Bello camminare sopra i 2000 metri, con intorno i panorami mozzafiato che circondano Cortina d'Ampezzo, ma sarebbe più bello poterli vedere da là dentro!". L'aereo di Alcock & Browne celebrava l'anniversario dell'impresa realizzata dai quasi omonimi aviatori John Alcock and Arthur Whitten Brown, che nel 1919 attraversarono per primi l'oceano Atlantico, a bordo di un Vickers Vimy. |
SUBJECT Do you need to make acquaintance with the Phantom? I believe than many people consider it, along with the F-104, the military aircraft par excellence. Massive, sturdy, powerful, versatile, generous, so beautiful that one forgets it's a death machine. It has been a common sight in my childhood, shooting above the Dolomites while I was climbing them with dad. Well, I thought Cortina d'Ampezzo had a breathtaking landscape, but what about enjoying it from inside that cockpit?". John Alcock and Arthur Whitten Brown were two British fliers who were the first people to fly an aircraft non-stop across the Atlantic ocean, in 1919. The paint job of this Phantom is to celebrate that record. Its crew, Alcock & Browne, was almost namesake of the recordmen.

MODELLO Questo soggetto dimostra come col tempo e con la calma prima o poi si verifica quella congiuntura fortunata che permette di realizzare l'aereo di una certa foto, anche a distanza di vent'anni dal primo "colpo di fulmine". Vidi per la prima volta una foto del soggetto in questione come "paginone centrale" di un numero del 1979 della rivista Jp4. Vari anni dopo, non ricordo nemmeno come né dove, entrai in possesso di un foglio di decals della Microscale per questo soggetto; foglio impostato sulle forme del kit di F-4K della Matchbox. Altri anni dopo, quando ormai il kit Matchbox era sparito anche dagli scaffali dei collezionisti più sfegatati, sulla lista dei modelli messi in vendita da una conoscente americana, vidi elencato il bel kit della Fujimi e decisi di unire le due cose per vedere quale risultato avrei potuto ricavarne. Eccolo.

MODEL This case shows how time and patience lead to the lucky combination that allows to model the airplane of a particular picture, even twenty years after you saw it. This plane was depicted in a central two-page poster of an Italian magazine named Jp4, issued in 1979. Many years later, I can't even recall where and how, I found the Microscale decal sheet of this subject, that was taylored on the Matchbox's F-4K kit. Later on, when the Matchbox's F-4K was even disappeared, I found a Fujimi F-4K for sale at a cheap price and I took the chance to mate the two, decals and kit, to see what the result would be. This is it. |
