Da un punto di vista modellistico, non si è mai attribuito alla Prima Guerra Mondiale l'importanza che meriterebbe. Quelle impiegate tra il 1915 ed il 1918, per quanto fossero crudeli macchine da guerra, portarono innovazioni tecnologiche ancora valide a quasi un secolo di distanza. Con loro, ad esempio, si passò dal cavallo al carro armato. Uno strumento che invece si è ormai defilato dal corso della Storia è la motrice a vapore, determinante sostituto della trazione animale per movimentare i pezzi di artiglieria di grosso calibro. Per quanto fosse ancora in uso dopo la fine del secondo conflitto mondiale, fu presto soppiantata da più potenti e versatili mezzi a combustione interna o a trazione diesel-elettrica. E' il caso di questa possente motrice Fowler "Lion", usata nel 1917 in Gran Bretagna, presso lo Aberdeen Proving Ground per movimentare armi ed equipaggiamenti sottoposti a collaudo o valutazione, come il pezzo tedesco M16 da 150mm che gli è agganciato. |
SUBJECT
Scale Modelling has never given to First World War the deserved importance. In that age armoured tanks replaced horses and, though being cruel war machines, those used from 1915 to 1918 brought technical improvement still useful now, almost a century later. By the way, steam tractors have left just their fading memory. Even if decisive to replace animals in towing heavy guns, and some being still in use after WW2, they were quickly replaced by more powerful versatile gas or electro-Diesel engined vehicles. A sample from that age is this powerful Fowler "Lion" tractor. It was used in 1917 by the Aberdeen Proving Ground, in the UK, to tow weapons and heavy equipments being tested or evaluated, like the German M16 150mm gun that it is towing. |

Per questo soggetto ho tratto ispirazione da una bella foto dell'epoca, dalla quale era possibile ricavare numerosi dettagli. La motrice fowler è ottenuta elaborando un grossolano kit a bassa pressione della KeilKraft in 1/72, comprato alcuni anni fa in un negozio di Ginevra. Il cannone tedesco ed il suo affusto sono autocostruiti in plasticard, con la canna tornita in ottone. Oltre all'originalità del soggetto, mi ha molto divertito riprodurre il contrasto pittorico tra i due veicoli: la motrice, per quanto militare, lascia intuire un'austera origine civile, con segni di usura accompagnata da una costante e laboriosa manutenzione; il cannone, invece, rivela come sia stato ottenuto riassemblando parti di mezzi differenti, alcuni praticamente nuovi, come il telaio del carrello, altri decisamente provati dall'uso, dalle intemperie e dalla corrosione, come la canna dell'arma e alcune delle ruote. L'intero complesso, in scala, è lungo 14 cm. |
MODEL
A neat picture from that age gave me inspiration to plan this project. The fowler tractor comes from a rough 1/72 KeilKraft kit, purchased some years ago in a small shop in Geneva. The German gun and its vehicle are built from scratch with laminated plastic sheet, while the barrel is brass milled with a lathe. Beyond to its originality, this subject amused me in obtaining the pictorial contrast between the two vehicles. Though being military, the tractor discloses its austere civil source, where weather and wear marks go together with a regular and laborious maintenance. On the contrary, the gun shows to have been reassembled from different vehicles, some almost new, like the chassis, some heavily worn by weather and rust, as the gun barrel and some of the wheels. The whole train in scale is 5" 3/16 long. |
