Fantasy points

Scoring explanation

In these Fantasy Hockey leagues, the fantasy points scored by NHL players are related to their performance in the real NHL games. There are some obvious differences in the calculation of the score between goalies and skaters (defensemen, centers and wings), because of the different nature of the positions and the different kind of stats usually recorded for them.
The fantasy points scored in one game are added together to make the season total for the player. However, each player won't contribute with his total fantasy points, but with his average fantasy points per game.
Moreover, to avoid that one player may have a high score with just very few games played in the season, there is a scoring penalization for players who doesn't reach a determinate treshold of "time on ice". This treshold is fixed as 60 games played for skaters and 2800 minutes (approximately 48 games) played for goalies. In both cases, this scoring penalization will be subtracted from their average fantasy points, as explained by the formulas reported below.

Fantasy points - Skaters

A skater earns 3 fantasy points for every goal scored and 3 points for every assist. Then his plus/minus rating is added (algebrically) to that total.
In case the skater doesn't reach the treshold of 60 game played, the penalty points are calculated by subtracting the games played from 60 and then dividing the result by 25.

For example, let's consider the following player:

N Name Team 99/00 Team 98/99 GP G A P +/- FP FPG PEN FP TOT FP
40 Doug Weight EDM EDM 43 6 31 37 -8 103 2.4 0.68 1.72

The fantasy points per game are calculated in the following way:

FPG = (3*G + 3*A + PM) / GP = (3*6 + 3*31 +(-8)) / 43 = 103 / 43 = 2.40

The penalization points are calculated in the following way:

PEN FP = (60 - GP) / 25 = (60 - 43) / 25 = 17 / 25 = 0.68

So the total fantasy points for the player are:

TOT FP = FPG - PEN FP = 2.40 - 0.68 = 1.72

Fantasy points - Goalies

For the goalies the calculation procedure is more complicated, because of the nature of the goalies stats that will be considered here.
Part of the points is related to the goalie's save percentage: numbers of saves - 9*goals against; another part is related to the goalie's goals against average: minutes played - 3*goals against; another part is a bonus due to his "outstanding" performances: 10*wins + 5*shootouts. This total amount of points is then divided by 10 and then divided again by the number of games played (calculated as minutes played/60).
In case the goalie doesn't reach the treshold of 2800 minutes played, the penalty points are calculated by subtracting the minutes played from 2800 and then dividing the result by 1600.

For example, let's consider the following player:

N Name Team 99/00 Team 98/99 GP W MIN GA GAA SO SA SA% FP FPA PEN FP TOT FP
6 Ron Tugnutt OTT OTT 43 22 2508 75 1.79 3 1005 93.06 285 6.82 0.18 6.64

The average fantasy points are calculated in the following way:

FPA = ((SA - 9*GA + MIN - 3*GA + 10*W + 5*SO) / 10) / GP = ((1005 - 9*75 + 2508 - 3*75 + 10*22 + 5*3)) / 10) / 43 = (2850 / 10) / 43 = 6.82

The penalization points are calculated in the following way:

PEN FP = (2800 - MIN) / 1600 = (2800 - 2508) / 1600 = 292 / 1600 = 0.18

So the total fantasy points for the player are:

TOT FP = FPA - PEN FP = 6.82 - 0.18 = 6.64
