The Geology of the Grand Canyon clickable image map Slopes of Dox Formation near Unkar Creek The truth is that no one knows for sure though there are some pretty good guesses
The chances are that a number of processes combined to create the views that you see in todays Grand Canyon
The most powerful force to have an impact on the Grand Canyon is erosion, primarily by water (and ice) and second by wind
Other forces that contributed to the Canyon's formation are the course of the itself, vulcanism, and slight variations in the earths orbit which in turn causes variations in seasons and climate
Many people cannot understand how water can have such a profound impact considering that the Canyon is basically located in a desert
Because the soil in the Grand Canyon is baked by the sun it tends to become very hard and cannot absorb water when the rains to come
The plants that grow in the Grand Canyon tend to have very shallow root systems so that they can grab as much water as possible on those rare occasions when it does rain
The result is frequently a flash flood roaring down a side canyon that can move boulders the size of automobiles, buses and even small houses

American Southwest - Grand Canyon National Park
An illustrated guide to the Grand Canyon - hiking trails, viewpoints, scenic
drives and hidden places.
| ARIZONA | Grand Canyon National Park Sites in Arizona NPS - Landscapes Grand Canyon NPS - Historic Sites Other Places The South Rim of the Grand Canyon is expensive and overcrowded, and there is usually a shortage of parking and accommodation, but that of course doesn't matter as the canyon is the most famous natural attraction in the USA and possibly in the world
No-one forgets their first sight of the Grand Canyon and it will never fail to impress or offer something new, no matter how often it is visit
Ninety percent of tourists see only the since it is easily accessible and the main road (AZ 64) parallels the canyon edge for some distance - here there is every conceivable facility, many superb overlooks and a choice of hiking trails
The only other part of the National Park that may be approached via paved roads is Havasu Canyon, contained within the to the west, although some hiking is required
Still further west, a few reasonable quality unpaved roads run through land of the including the one down that leads all the way to the Colorado, giving access to many isolated side canyons as well as the river itself
On the other side of the Grand Canyon, the particularly remote area to the northwest can be reached by several dirt tracks of over 60 miles starting from US 89 in Utah and offers some spectacular viewpoints, but most of the countless square miles of the canyon and its tributaries are completely inaccessible by road
