UN OMAGGIO IDEALE

Le scene rappresentate nelle tele sono liberamente tratte da una storia fantastica inventata dagli scrittori Christopher Isherwood ed Edward Upward, quando erano studenti di Cambridge negli anni Venti del XX° Secolo, i cui frammenti rimasti sono citati nel libro "Leoni e ombre" del 1938, poi ripresi e pubblicati nel 1994 in una raccolta inedita in Italia, "The Mortmere Stories".

"… Se Mortmere doveva avere una trama, quale doveva essere il tema centrale? Naturalmente, l'eterno conflitto tra l'Ostello dei Ratti e il sistema universitario. […] Mortmere doveva essere senz'altro una tragedia…."

"… Chalmers cominciò subito a raccontarmi le sue ultime scoperte e idee sull'Ostello dei Ratti e l'Altra Città: "Tutto il concetto è disgustosamente quish... Eravamo su una strada completamente sbagliata. L'Altra Città non ha niente a che vedere con Cambridge. Ecco dov'era il nostro errore fatale: fingere che Cambridge fosse in qualche modo romantica. Vedi, Cambridge non è minimamente romantica: è odiosamente reale e sordida. È assolutamente concreta... fino all'ultimo dei suoi stupidi mattoni.…."

About "The Mortmere Stories"

 

AN IDEAL TRIBUTE

The paintings are an ideal tribute for "The Mortmere Stories", a grotesque fictional world by Christopher Isherwood & Edward Upward, based on a series of stories invented when they were students in Cambridge. You can find notice about it in "Lions and shadows", the first of Christopher Isherwood's autobiographical writings. But the entire stories were never been published. Some remnants were assembled only in 1994 with the same title by Enitharmon Press.

"… If Mortmere was to have a plot, what was to be our central theme? Obviously, the eternal conflict between the Rats' Hostel and the University system. […] Mortmere would certainly have to be a tragedy…"

"…Chalmers at once began to tell me his latest discoveries and ideas about The Rats' Hostel and the Other Town: "The whole conception's disgustingly quisb… We were on the wrong track, altogether. The Other Town has nothing whatever to do with Cambridge. That's where we made our fatal mistake - trying to pretend that Cambridge was somehow romantic. You see, Cambridge isn't romantic in the least: it's loathsomely real and sordid. It's absolutely solid - every stupid brick of it…"

Edward Falaise Upward (9 Settembre 1903 - 13 Febbraio 2009) è stato uno scrittore inglese e, prima della sua morte, si pensa sia stato il più longevo degli scrittori britannici.

Edward Falaise Upward (9 September 1903 – 13 February 2009) was a British novelist and short story writer and, prior to his death, was believed to be the UK's oldest living author.
