Colour-ringing Project in Italy

Since 1991 more than 400 pullus Avocet have been fitted with numbered metal and black plastic ring engraved with alpha-numeric code. Birds are ringed at breeding sites in some coastal wetlands of Emilia-Romagna region (NE Italy). Birds have now been observed in several sites of Italy (around the study area) and in Hungary, Spain, Portugal and Marocco. Thanks to the activity of many shorebird watcher who, like Avocet, spent mostly of their time in salt wetlands of Mediterranean Basin.

A pullus ringed A ringed pullus of Avocet
Pullus ringed in may 1991 in the Salina di Cervia (NE Italy) and sighted in Meksikopuszta (Hungary, east side of Neusiedel See) in June 1997 (T. Hadarics and S. Mogyorosi sighted).

The details of the scheme are as follows:

  • BLACK PVC rings with white letters and numbers
  • Plastic rings are 22 mm high and c. 8 mm wide
  • There are white letter+numbers (one letter and two numbers) engraved , readable from bottom to top or vice-versa
  • Black plastic ring in pullus are on right leg, above tarsal joint (metal on left)
  • Adult (few individuals) are fitted with the black ring on left
