A destra, ritroviamo Louise immersa nella lettura. La Brooks fu anche lettrice di Smart Set, la rivista  che pubblicò i racconti di Francis Scott Fitzgerald (1896 - 1940), si presume alla fine degli anni Dieci (e Louise potrebbe benissimo averli letti). Infatti This side of paradise (Di qua dal paradiso)  fu pubblicato, per i tipi della Scribner's, nell'aprile del 1920, mentre il successivo libro, Flappers and philosophers (Maschiette e filosofi), vide la luce appena cinque mesi dopo, in settembre. Esso consta di una serie di racconti incentrati sul tipo della flapper, direttamente ispirata dalla figura della moglie Zelda Sayre (1900 - 1948); sul risguardo di una delle prime copie l'autore scrisse una dedica a H. L. Mencken, che li aveva originariamente pubblicati proprio sulla rivista The Smart Set.
          Louise Brooks stessa, nel capitolo iniziale di Lulu in Hollywood

instituirà una sorta di identificazione tra sé stessa e Zelda: "A questo punto devo svelare una maledizione che mi perseguita da sempre. Nel dicembre del 1940 Scott Fitzgerald la definì bene quando scrisse a sua figlia Scotty: 'Zelda è tragicamente brillante in ogni campo, eccetto in quello di maggiore importanza: non sa stare in società'.
          Quando incontrò per la prima volta Hemingway, nel 1925, Zelda lo chiamò "falso". Hemingway si vendicò dandole pubblicamente della "pazza" e definendo Scott un pericoloso ubriacone, col risultato che furono allontanati dai loro amici, i Murphy, e di conseguenza da tutta la cerchia della Costa Azzurra".
        Fitzgerald morì proprio il 21 Dicembre 1940, per un attacco cardiaco; Zelda otto anni dopo nel rogo della propria casa di cura.
          La loro vita diverrà una delle tante leggende americane, inutili e secondarie; tanto quelle vere giacciono inascoltate.
