A destra, Louise Brooks quando non aveva ancora sentito parlare della teoria autoriale dei Cahiers du cinéma. Quando vi fu un'edizione inglese di quella storica rivista, il curatore, Andrew Sarris, pubblicò persino una lettera della Brooks, la quale, a proposito della teoria suddetta rivelò a Kevin Brownlow in The Parade's gone by: "Credo che la teoria degli autori dei Cahiers du cinéma sia una merda. Ho letto il primo numero inglese. Mi ci sono volute due ore e tre dizionari per finire l'articolo di Bazin su tale teoria e scoprire quello che tutti sanno sin dalla nascita del cinema: che alcuni scrittori e alcuni registi sono gelosi della fama dei divi e che la teoria degli autori è solo un altro tentativo di spazzarli via dallo schermo con le parole. E' la cosa più sciocca mai inventata. Dopo che un film è finito le parole non aiutano certo il cattivo

regista; e un grande regista non ne ha bisogno." In seguito, dopo aver considerato che un grande attore come Charlie Chaplin non teneva in gran conto l'interpretazione rispetto al proprio ruolo di intellettuale e autore (si compiaceva delle lodi  per A woman in Paris, del quale è esclusivamente regista), così come l'altro grande attore John Barrymore, Louise sembrerà arrivare alla conclusione opposta: "Mr. Pabst mi ha resa importante. Il teatro è formato dagli attori, il cinema dai registi". L'apparente dilemma, in realtà, si scioglie solo in presenza di registi di levatura teorica eccezionale (Eizenstein, Bunuel, Pasolini ...) e soprattutto di scuola europea; per artigiani come John Ford aumentano già le forzature; per Chris Columbus e Ron Howard siamo all'inapplicabilità. E ancora: quale autore si cela dietro Via col vento? E Guerre stellari? E The cell?
