Trama e note

 
Ci si offrono due coppie inseparabili: Jimmy e Scotty, che lavorano in una casa da gioco; Diana e Jeanne, una ballerina ed una cassiera del luna park di Coney Island (dal titolo alternativo e dal curriculum vitae di Louise Brooks potrebbe dedursi che la MacKaill è la cassiera: non è così). Jimmy è un misogino, Scotty invece cede alle grazie della bionda Jeanne e lo confida all'amico. Ma le panie d'amore sono imprevedibili: quando Jimmy incontra Jeanne, per perorare la causa amorosa dell'amico, egli se ne innamora: tuttavia resiste per non rompere il patto di lealtà con Scotty. I quattro si recano ad una gara di aeroplani: su uno di essi salgono proprio Jimmy e Jeanne, ma l'aereo, per una imprevedibile panne, è sulla via di sfracellarsi al suolo: di fronte all'ineluttabile si confessano vicendevolmente il proprio amore, come il nazista di The blues brothers sull'automobile precipite. Ma il velivolo galeotto non si schianta; dopo una breve convalescenza abbiamo la rivelazione: il machiavellico Scotty ama Diana; il suo era un trucco per spingere il sodale tra le braccia della biondina.
Per questo film Louise viene "prestata" dalla
Famous Players - Lasky alla rivale First National per la somma di $1.000 a settimana, senza peraltro che Louise ne sappia niente; dire che fosse distratta dal matrimonio, celebrato con Eddie Sutherland il 21 luglio, è difficile dato che, durante la lavorazione del film, intrattenne una fugace corrispondenza d'amorosi sensi con William Collier.
Il grande scrittore argentino Adolfo Bioy Casares, in gioventù, e non solo, si innamorò di Louise Brooks; ma era anche un'ammiratore della Mackaill come confida nella sua autobiografia (cfr. giudizi celebri I). Può darsi che abbia visto il film in quel di Rosario, Buenos Aires, nel 1927.
