Trama e note

 
Wally e Ray sono dipendenti dell'eccentrico conte scozzese Lord Abercrombie. Trovatisi, per motivi di sceneggiatura francamente oscuri, sul fronte francese durante la I Guerra Mondiale, vengono arruolati come aviatori. Inetti alla bisogna, passano le linee nemiche e, catturati dai Tedeschi, rischiano la fucilazione. Salvatisi, incontrano le graziose gemelle Griselle e Grisette ed entrambi si innamorano di una di loro: l'incapacità di distinguerle darà via ad una lunga serie di malintesi.
Il film, nelle intenzioni, si basava sull'affiatamento del collaudato duo Beery - Hatton che replicherà alcune
gags dei primi anni '20 esaltate dalla formula buddy movie - commedia degli equivoci.
Il film ebbe un modesto successo presso il pubblico; oggi, purtroppo, un giudizio, almeno sino ad ora, è impossibile, data la totale irreperibilità dello stesso, anche se, all'epoca, in Italia, ebbe, assieme a
Il signore della notte e Il trionfo di Venere, un buon apprezzamento delle platee. E' bene notare che l'apparente implausibilità della storia avrebbe potuto, rivista a decenni di distanza, segnare un punto a favore della pellicola: la libertà  e semplicità dei film muti sono spesso una boccata d'ossigeno rispetto alle standardizzazione e ruffianeria attuali, Spielberg & Co., il new age cinema , le volgarizzazioni scespiriane e i ritorni indefiniti degli uomini ragno. 
Durante la lavorazione del film Louise provò un'acuta nostalgia per il periodo di New York (dove aveva lasciato i pigmalioni Townsend Martin e Walter Wanger) tanto da recarvisi spesso riallacciando vecchi e nuovi rapporti. Tra questi ultimi figura George Marshall, che diverrà una figura importante per Louise in molte scelte (spesso sbagliate) della sua carriera.
L'unica persona che, ad Hollywood, Louise non trattasse con alterigia fu Wallace Beery, che stimò sempre per la sua bonomia e la capacità di renderla allegra (a differenza di Kenneth Anger che in

Hollywood Babilonia
lo definisce icasticamente "un gran pezzo di merda").
