Trama e note

 
Aubrey Piper, un modesto impiegato, esibizionista e bugiardo, con una spiccata tendenza a mettersi nei pasticci, si innamora di Amy conquistandola con la sua irrefrenabile loquela. Il fratello di Amy, Joe, un inventore frustrato (di una speciale pittura antiruggine), è invece amico della deliziosa vicina di casa, Clara. Dopo qualche perlessità dei genitori, Amy sposa Aubrey, mentre Mr. Fisher decide di finanziare l'invenzione di Joe coi soldi derivati dall'ipoteca sulla casa.
Frattanto Aubrey vince un automobile ad una lotteria ma, nel portarla a casa, semina scompiglio nella città, distrugge l'auto stessa e rischia d'investire un vigile; e cattive notizie arrivano da casa: Mr. Fisher è morto. Aubrey affronta il processo: viene condannato a cinquecento dollari di multa, ma l'esibizionismo (The show - off appunto) e la logorrea lo portano a straparlare in aula e l'ammenda viene aumentata a mille dollari, la somma dell'ipoteca. Visto il cognato in cattive acque, il misericordioso Joe dona i soldi per liberarlo di prigione; ma intanto Clara, con i Fisher sull'orlo dello sfratto, contrattacca e svergogna Aubrey davanti ai parenti. Quest'ultimo, umiliato, si rifugia nel laboratorio di Joe dove, compulsando gli appunti, è colpito da una lucrosa idea: colla sua irrefrenabile chiacchiera vende l'invenzione di Joe alla locale compagnia ferroviaria per 50.000 $: l'onore e i Fisher sono salvi.
In The show - off, nonostante il ruolo centrale di Ford Sterling, è Louise a brillare; con un
look paradigmatico della moda degli anni Venti delizia la critica e soprattutto conferma una peculiarità: non importa in quale film reciti: la sua sola presenza, uno sguardo, una movenza lo illuminano e giustificano.
