Trama e note

Max Haber è un barbiere di provincia, assistito dal padre Johann e dalla manicurist Kitty. Quando quest'ultima si trasferisce a New York per tentare di sfondare nel mondo dello spettacolo come ballerina, Max, innamorato, la segue. Nella metropoli, mentre Kitty trova lavoro in un night-club, Max tira avanti in una barberia di Broadway. Per una serie di fortuite circostanze, Max prende il posto di un conte francese: il nostro se la cava così bene da divenire l'attrazione, mondana, dell'alta società nuovaiorchese. Sfortunatamente, proprio nel locale ove si esibisce Kitty, viene smascherato. Nel frattempo il padre lo avverte che, senza di lui, la bottega del paese sta andando a rotoli. Max decide di tornare all'ovile e Kitty, innamorata di lui, lo seguirà.
Il film, oltre che lo sfruttamento della tipizzazione di Menjou quale raffinato gentiluomo di vaghe ascendenze europee, è una prima celebrazione della
flapper - girl che Louise Brooks incarna irresistibilmente: fare indipendente, una figura snella e vivace, sprezzo per le virtù femminili tradizionali, una giovinezza prorompente e naturalmente la famosa acconciatura con caschetto e frangetta (the bob).
Louise sorprende ancora tutti per la bellezza e la freschezza dell'interpretazione e si prepara a scalare la vetta.
