Mathias Knop (cfr. bibliografia italiana in tagebuch III),
All'interno di
didascalie in spagnolo.
esistenti in tedesco, ricostruite negli anni Sessanta.
Montevideo, chiarisce l'evidente sottomissione presente fin dall'inizio, e
fronte a Meta.
In spiaggia
didascalie bilingui: in francese e in tedesco. Graficamente queste didascalie
importanza - a torto.
In
... Almost in the same period when
it has been decided to produce a broad retrospective of Pabst at Berlin's
Filmfestspiele in 1997, Bologna's Film Library announced an exciting
discovery. Following an acquisition of several nitrate copies from archives
of Montevideo's Film Library in Uruguay, an extremely cut copy of the
Tagebuch has appeared in Bologna and after its first showings it seemed
to contain some completely unknown scenes of the film. In July 1996 I
personally had the possibility to see this copy, a total lenght of 1600 m.,
at the cutting and editing table. Indeed it contained many scenes of which
the censorship report had indicated its cuts. The film had probably reached
Uruguay as an export copy without observing any German censorship previsions.
A great number of lines in the film made one think that (despite its being
only a badly cut fragment) it had been shown many times and moreover,
besides some German captions, it also contained some Spanish captions.
Before reaching Uruguay's Archives the film had been owned by a private
Uruguayan collector who had converted his cellar into a small cinema and
very often shown the film to small groups of people.
Up to the that time the
German Cinematography Institute had carried out any research studies in
collaboration with the Friedrich Wilhelm Murnau Foundation, but with the
sole intention of completing the captions. Both institutions announced their
willingness to finish the complete film restoration in order to present it
at the above-mentioned Pabst retrospective.
Following further
investigations, additional material important for the restoration of
Tagebuch einer Verlorenen was found in the Archives of Copenaghen,
Brussels and Berlin. In Copenaghen no nitrate material was found, but a
negative drawn at the end of the 50s from a nitrate by now destroyed. This
negative was only 2,050 m. long, has some editing errors and no unedited
scenes, but from the standpoint of images it was in many parts better than
all other copies, and thus became an important 'framework' for the
restoration.
The material found in
Brussels is really curious: it is a copy made partly in nitrate and partly
in acetate, evidently an initial restoration of Tagebuch dating back
to the early 50s made of different materials. With its 2,699 m., this copy
was a bit longer than known copies in Germany (2,600 m. long) and contained
versions of scenes actually already known, but significantly more detailed.
From the copy found
in Berlin State Archives, the only existing German captions restored in the
60s were used.
From a structural
analysis of all copies, it resulted that different European versions were,
at least in details, more different from one another than what could be seen
at first glance. This was mainly true for critical passages on which even
censors from other countries had made cuts. For instance, reform school
scenes were heavily cut in all versions, but differently from case to case,
and the same holds for brothel scenes.
After having
re-established the sequence of scenes as completely as possible on the basis
of European copies, the accurate vision of the Montevideo material proved to
be the real discovery of this restoration. The 'heart' of this copy is the
so called 'exercise scene' absolutely unknown up to now, lasting 6 minutes,
where Siegfried Arno must do exercises as a guest of the brothel following
the beat given by Thymian. Here a known pattern from other contexts is
ironically taken and varied: Thymian uses a drum as the instrument for the
beat, the same instrument that the guard in the reform school had already
used in her role as a harsh gym teacher. In the scene where the guard was
beaten in the dormitory one of the girls also played the drum. In the
brothel, Thymian has now become the one who gives the beat and the drum is
the mark of her (presumed) emancipation. The sadistic and perverted
seriousnesss this 'exercise' has in the bourgeois setting of the reform
school is transformed in the brothel to erotic play. Thus the drum pattern
becomes, in this continuous repetition, a sort of running gag which
takes increasingly absurd shapes each time.
Another scene unknown
till now and found in the Montevideo material clarifies the evident
submission of Henning toward Meinert, present since the beginning and
incomprehensible till now. Meinert who had been in any case the cause of the
druggist's family catastrophe since he had dishonoured Thymian. Now we know
that immediately after the wedding with Meta, a judiciary auction has been
impending on Henning's pharmacy. The scene shows creditors gathered at
Henning's home zealously gesticulating and putting the latter under pressure
when at the last second Meinert pays the necessary sum with a theatrical and
flaunted gesture, takes over the mortgage and at the same time humiliates
Henning before Meta.
For the first time now
even the scenes of Thymian's holidays with Osdorff at Swinemünde are
complete. While in the versions known thus far it was just a sequence
without a real dramatic meaning, now Thymian's decisions to enter the
Society to save troubled girls, till now considered rather indifferent,
becomes more plausible. On the beach she meets a brothel client, the same
with whom she had spent her first night there. Thymian can barely face his
even more impudent approaches, and only by chance is she saved from his
intrusiveness. She can definitely escape the assault to her obscure past
only by expressly clarifying her position for the future.
Short scenes discovered
from time to time, scattered almost randomly, have restored Tagebuch
einer Verlorenen to those harsher accents we mentioned above; the short
prayer of the guard in the reform school while she holds the stick with
which she suddenly beats on the table; the continuous tender-brutal grip of
the guard on the napes of the girls' necks; his note in the diary 'Erika
punished' with a lovely heart drawn nearby, etc.
By using all the above
material, a version of the Tagebuch einer Verlorenen with a lenght of
2,980 m. has been restored with only six minutes missing to the original
lenght. Obviously the scenes showing the suicide of Henning's first
governess are absent; some fragments of Montevideo's copy refer to this even
though they do not adapt to the contents of the restored copy. The rather
uneven flowing of the action in the above brothel exercise scene leads us to
assume that some parts are missing here as well.
The restoration of German
captions - not yet concluded - has proven to be difficult (and expensive).
Without any censorship sheet, and because of a lack of time, the captions
restored from the copy of State Archives have been used in the copy
presented at Berlin, although they do not correspond to the original ones in
neither text nor graphic form.
Meanwhile we could go
back to the original text of Brussels copy were some bilingual captions were
present, both in French and German. Graphically these captions were so
poorly constructed that at the beginning no importance was given to them,
but wrongfully. From a comparison of the text of some captions mentioned in
the censorship report with the 'German part' of this bilingual version, the
result was a complete accordance and we have thus come to the conslusion
that it was truly the text being sought.
The Montevideo copy was a
great help; indeed, five captions were found to correspond to the original,
both in the text and graphics, and now we 'only' have to restore the
remaining 106 captions with the original graphics. |
