Trama e note

 
Il film, partorito dalla fervida mente di Townsend Martin, è sostanzialmente una storia sull'elezione di Miss America (Fay Lanphier, eletta Miss America 1925 ad Atlantic City), una variazione delle bellezze al bagno con intrigo amoroso di sottofondo. La pellicola è l'occasione per mettere in risalto la giovanile sfrontatezza e soprattutto la bellezza di Louise che si dispiega in virtù di costumi che la lasciano praticamente seminuda.
I censori dell'epoca, evidentemente abbacinati, lasciarono fare.
Da segnalare una porzione del film a colori.
Due le cose di rilievo all'epoca del film: una relazione con Charlie Chaplin, che Louise documenterà nell'articolo
Charlie Chaplin remembered, e un set di fotografie scattate mentre era ancora una chorus girl delle Follies che la ritrae più che seminuda. Louise Brooks, tramite un legale, chiese il blocco della diffusione degl'incauti scatti; "Foolish!", tuonerà l'autore De Mirjian, ma sarà costretto a battere in ritirata. Una prima presa di posizione della diciannovenne piantagrane apparirà sul Daily Mirror il 30 Novembre 1925 (cfr. la biografia di Barry Paris, pp. 114-116 oppure intervista XVI); proprio in seguito al successo di The American Venus tale storia verrà amplificata dalla stampa finché, il 21 marzo 1926, apparve, contemporaneamente sul "Washington Post", sul "Sacramento Union" e sul "Philadelphia Inquirer", l'articolo Where and why Miss Brooks draws the line (cfr. intervista XV). In tale pezzo la Brooks giustifica la decisione di opporsi alla pubblicazione delle foto con una serie di considerazioni abbastanza sensate (a parte l'invocazione al pudore ed alla modestia) e sicuramente mature per una giovanissima provinciale come lei, tanto da far nascere il dubbio che il tutto non fosse un'operazione della Famous Players o del suo avvocato; tuttavia anche le interviste successive confermano un certo tono 'alto' delle sue dichiarazioni.
