Welcome to the home page of the TELSURPROJECT at the Linguistics Laboratory, University of Pennsylvania [] [][] [] [] [] The Telsur Project is a survey of linguistic changesin progress in North American English, supported by the National ScienceFoundation and the National Endowment for the Humanities
It is the creatorof the Atlas of North American English [ANAE], (formerly, the PhonologicalAtlas of North America )
This chapter defines themajor dialects of North America on the basis of the status of the low shortvowels /*/ and /o/ and the active chain shifts and mergers
This paper presents the overall results of the Telsur Projectin responding to the question, 'How many dialects of American English arethere?' and 'Where are the boundaries located?' It is based on the acousticanalysis of 240 Telsur interviews carried out so far, with further datafrom the impressionistic analysis of the full sample of 640 speakers representingurban areas

For the past three years, the Linguistics Laboratory of the University of Pennsylvania has been engaged in an effort to supply this information through Telsur, a telephone survey of North America, supported by NSF, NEH and Bell Northern Research
The end product of the survey is the Phonological Atlas of North America , which maps the phonological organization of all English dialects and the extent of ongoing sound changes
North American dialects are differentiated by unconditioned mergers, which affect the phonemes wherever they appear, and by conditioned mergers, which occur in a particular environment
