Chronological history

From the Carthaginians to the Byzantines
(IIIrd. cent. b.C. - VIIth cent. a.C.)
Trade grew under the Arabs hands
(VIIIth cent. a.C. - XIIth cent. a.C.)
Trapani is the foremost centre in western Sicily
(XIIIth cent. a.C. - XIXth cent. a.C.)
After the first Punic war, Drepana became part of the Roman Empire.
Then followed the Barbarian invasions and the Byzantine dominion.
A leading trading centre under the Arabs and the Normans, Trapani became an important trade centre. Its importance grew under the Aragons.
In the 16th century Charles V had the city wall strengthened almost completed demolished in 1860.
