On March 31th, a few of Leslie's friends were guest on the radio program 'Who will understand'. It included his friends such as Suzie Wong, Lam Jik, Sandra Ng, Chan Siu Po. We can always tell from the tone in Lam Jik's voice whenever he spoke of Leslie that he really is a true friend of Leslie's, and he misses him. Here the translation of what Lam Jik said about the song 'Glass Love': "If I have to choose a song of Leslie's from the long time we have worked together, I would definitely pick the last song we worked on together which was also his last song 'Glass Love'. Why I choose this song is because I regret very much that at that time I wasn't very clear about the condition of his illness, so I did not do my best to write lyrics that could have encouraged him, I continued to write feelings of hurt. After that incident happened, I felt very guilty, I feel that in this world there are a lot of things and people that are very sad, should I continue to reflect that in my lyrics of love songs? I came to a realization, and it influenced the direction I took in my lyrics that followed." Chan Siu Bo picked the song 'Vincent' to play for Leslie. Many thanks to Devoted Fan!

Patrick Tam's views on Leslie - "There were quite a number of 'super stars' in 'Ashes of Time'. However, I did not do anything to balance the weights of the different roles. There wasn't any special treatment to anyone. Either you earn it or you don't. I think Leslie is the best one in the movie. Take those lines on selling the killers for example, he did it so well that I used those shots twice". Source: 'The Movie World of Wong Kar Wai'.
"As an actor, the greatest thing about Leslie was his self-confidence. Yet he was not self-centered. He was confident of his ability to interpret the role he played. He never bothered about keeping his own image. His confidence came from his thorough understanding and manifestation of the role. That was why he could always put his own self behind and lived the life of the role every time he came before the camera. He never posed himself to 'look good' or 'play cool' in movies. He was too dignified to do that - that's just some kind of tricks for those who can't act to fool the audience. He is a genuine artist." Source: 'Leslie's Legacy - his charm, charisma and craft remembered on celluloid'.

'Days of Being Wild': the best movie of Wong Kar Wai - Interview with Patrick Tam on a Chinese magazine
B: Apart from being a director, you are also an art director and film editor. As an editor, your works in 'Days of Being Wild' and 'Ashes of Time' are very impressive.
T: I enjoyed editing 'Days of Being Wild' very much. Wong Kar Wai was very spontaneous with his movies. The important thing is to catch the mood/feeling. He gave me a lot of freedom to edit the film.
B: You seemed to be particularly happy with the scene in which Leslie danced 'cha-cha'.
T: That scene was not in the screenplay. Wong Kar Wai had no idea where the scene should go (in the movie). Anyway, it was shot and passed over to me for editing. He also shot a scene in which Leslie smoked on his bed after Carina Lau had left. One day, Wong Kar Wai gave me a tape which recorded the monologue of Leslie on 'the bird without legs'. I started to think where the lines could fit in. I tried using the scene of Leslie lying on his bed and the length was just right. That was how it was done. Then I thought about the part on cha-cha and put it right after the bed scene. Those two shots and the monologue became the theme of the character. A single cut would bring out the character of the role played by Leslie – he looks very decadent in bed in one scene and in the one that cuts in next, he is highly energetic and ready to enjoy life. Portrayal of such a huge contrast (in the character) was done with 2 shots and one cut. That was what I loved most. Even Wong Kar Wai said "perfect" when he saw it.

Meeting stars face-to-face in Shanghai - The wax figure of the late Hong Kong singer and movie star Leslie Cheung seemed to be the most popular figure in the new Madame Tussauds Shanghai. It opened Monday at the New World Department Store on West Nanjing Road. More than 20 fans of Cheung who jumped off from a building in Hong Kong in 2003 brought along bunches of flowers for their idol. "I came here just for him. But I think his hairstyle should be refined a little," said Yang Yuqin, in her 20s. Other popular featured celebrities were Tom Cruise, Brad Pitt, Li Ka Shing and Bill Gates. "What makes us choose which celebrities should be in the museum is consumer feedback," said Edward Fuller, general manager of Madame Tussauds Shanghai. After asking which celebrities local people want to meet the most, the museum chose 74 figures including basketball player Yao Ming and Olympic gold medal 110-metre hurdler Liu Xiang. The exhibition area is divided up into seven themed sections: Glamour, Behind the Scenes, History and Heroes, Music, Film, Speed and Sport. "This is just the first phase of three. We will have more wax figures in the future," the manager said at the opening ceremony. Many visitors arrived long before the opening time. "We arrived early as my daughter was excited for a long time; here there are many of her idols," said a woman surnamed Ma. "But I think the price is a little high." Most visitors said the 125 yuan (US$16) price of an adult ticket was a little expensive but none of them said they had hesitated before making the purchase. Throngs of visitors meant the museum was crowded just an hour after its opening. People had to wait to shake hands with Bill Clinton, to have a hug with Brad Pitt while Angelina Jolie stood just two metres away, or to talk face-to-face with Audrey Hepburn. There are no bodyguards or entourage to get in the way unlike in real life. Madame Tussauds Shanghai is the Tussauds Group's sixth waxwork museum. There are other museums in London, Amsterdam, Las Vegas, New York and Hong Kong. Source: ChinaDaily

Chinese reject wax Prince Charles - Britain's Prince Charles, who caused a stir by describing Chinese officials as "appalling old waxworks," has failed to make the cut at Shanghai's new Madame Tussauds Museum. Charles's late wife, Princess Diana, and their elder son, Prince William, are on display. Soccer star David Beckham and his pop singer wife, Victoria, rub shoulders with celebrity Hollywood couple Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie. Charles's unflattering reference was contained in a diary he kept during a visit to Hong Kong in 1997 for the handover of the former British colony to China. A British newspaper published the diaries last November. The Shanghai museum, which opened Monday, is the sixth Madame Tussauds. The others are in London, England; Amsterdam, the Netherlands; Las Vegas, Nevada; New York and Hong Kong. The China Daily said the most popular of the 70-plus figures on opening day was that of the late Hong Kong singer and movie star Leslie Cheung. Source: Reuters - CNN - Yahoo!

Singer Stephanie Suen didn't remember the lyrics to the song she was performing at the Golden Melody Awards. Jacky Cheung says that most singers are usually nervous before their performance on stage. Even if he has sung a song for 100 times, he cannot guarantee that he is not going to make a mistake for the 101st time. He adds, "When I was still a newbie, Leslie was already a superstar. Eunice Lam recently conducted an interview with Tony Leung Kar Fai. Here is very brief translation of part of the original article, only touching on the parts that relate to Leslie.

On making movies, Tony Leung Kar Fai has collaborated with demised Leslie Cheung 6 times in total. "In the beginning, Leslie Cheung thought I was a fake person. Later after he and my father-in-law played several ball games together, he said, "I really didn't expect you to be like this." Tony Leung Kar Fai fondly reminisces Leslie Cheung; "He was extremely talented and versatile. He had been in this circle for so many years yet he still possessed that innocence and naiveness in him. He was very sensitive but his anger usually dissipated quickly. He was a person full of sentiments and strong emotions; he was so immersed in his character role when making 'Farewell My Concubine' that it frightened the daylight out of Fengyi Zhang.  In the film, Leslie Cheung placed the love of 'Gei' (concubine) completely in 'Ba Wang' (the Overlord)." Touching on Leslie Cheung's purity, Tony Leung Kar Fai said very frankly that he does not like Wong Kar-Wai.  He felt that Wong Kar-Wai had exploited Leslie Cheung. "He made use of Leslie Cheung to coax Tony Leung Chiu Wai to film 'Happy Together'. They had to wait a long time in Argentina because Tony Leung Chiu Wai was still not mentally prepared to play a gay role." On director Chen Kaige, "Compared to Zhang Yimou, Chen Kaige is more genuine. His 'Farewell My Concubine' was brilliantly made. He never took advantage of Leslie Cheung.  Leslie loved this film very much. He had a flair for languages. He spoke Mandarin and English ever so fluently. I do miss this true and genuine friend."- Source LeslieTong.com - many many thanks to Simie!

In a recent interview with Eunice Lam, Tony Leung Ka-Fai talked about his good friend and colleague, Leslie. He has collaborated with Leslie for about six times. Ka-Fai said, "Leslie is so talented. Although he has been in the showbiz for so many years, he is still very innocent. He would show all his emotions on his face." Ka-Fai further added, "Leslie is very a 'tightwad,' but he is not going to be angry for a long time." Ka-Fai doesn't like director Wong Kar-Wai since he feels that Wong used Leslie for the movie 'Happy Together'.
Eunice Lam added, "Leslie is very good at languages, he is fluent in Mandarin and English. I really miss this great friend. I don't have to interview Ka-Fai to write about Leslie, I can write about Leslie myself since I've known him for years." - Source:
Nan Fang Daily from Leslie-Cheung.net.

In another interview on TV Tony Leung Kar Fai talked about the scene in 'The Eagle shooting Heroes', where in drag he dance and sing with Leslie. He looked visibly moved while talking about GorGor. Here what he said:
"I sang the Cantonese version of the song but the Mandarin version was dubbed by someone else. I like this scene very much; I also have fond memories of this scene. I like this scene because a lot of my friends and relatives said to me that I looked very much like my mother in this image. (laughter from the host and the audience). I cherish this scene because this scene was directed by  Leslie Cheung and myself.  We both directed this scene together because the crew at that time did not know how to shoot this segment anymore.  When I came out in that image, the production crew at the scene was already killing themselves at the sight of me, at least half of them totally lost it; the remaining crew looked at me and said they didn't know how to continue filming.  In the end it was Leslie Cheung who wrote the lyrics on the spot; he penned the lyrics right there at the scene.  Ahem... we also shoot the dance segment ourselves, right up to the very last dance movement, it was Leslie and I, we filmed it together so I really cherish this scene very much".

Chen Kaige regrets that Leslie Cheung died young - Chen Kaige will direct a movie about famous Chinese Opera singer Mei Lanfang. Although Chen Kaige is very happy to have the chance to personally present Mei Lanfang opera master's life on the silver screen, he sighed very much that Leslie Cheung died young, because he could be the only one able to perform as Mei Lanfang. Now Chen must select the actor among Peking opera singers. Source: WenWeiPo
Chen Kaige considering movie on late Peking opera star Mei Lanfang - Chen Kaige is considering making a movie on late Peking opera star Mei Lanfang, an assistant to the famed Chinese director said Sunday, but he denied the project has been confirmed. Wen Wei Po newspaper reported Sunday that Chen has already signed on to direct the Mei biopic. "It's still under preparation,'' Huang Bin, an assistant to Chen, told the Associated Press. "It's still at the script-writing stage.'' Asked if Chen had made any casting decisions, Huang said: "Definitely not.'' Wen Wei Po lamented that Hong Kong actor-singer Leslie Cheung would have been ideal to play Mei. Cheung, who played an opera star in Chen's Oscar-nominated "Farewell My Concubine,'' committed suicide in 2003. Hong Kong director Stanley Kwan is reportedly also considering making a film on Mei and has approached Cannes best actor winner Tony Leung Chiu-wai to play the lead. Born in 1894, Mei was known for developing the performance of female characters in Chinese opera and was a pioneer in promoting Peking opera abroad, touring Japan, the U.S. and the Soviet Union. Back for 20 years, the elegant stylish Leslie Cheung and Anita Mui re-appears at the "Art Museum of Trend" - "Art Museum of Trend of 80s" will be opened at World Trade Centre in Hong Kong next Sunday, from August 6th to September 30th, 2006. People will have a chance to see the elegance of the super stars such as Anita Mui, Leslie Cheung of Capital Artists, and also many other things of 80s that were considered as super stylish. The exhibition is organised by Capital Artists HK at the World Trade Centre. The exhibition is on the 80s music industry. Nowadays it is big news when a popular artist's records sell over ten thousand copies but back in the 80s, artists that achieved a gold record for selling over 25,000 copies only got a mere mention in the recording company's flyer. Capital Artists spokesperson said that some of Leslie's records sold over 400,000 copies.  Capital Artists spokesperson also mentioned about Leslie's album cover for 'Loving You'.  The spokesperson revealed that at that time Leslie had disclosed that the ring that he wore for the album shoot was given to him by the person he loved most.  It was only later that they realized that this person was Mr Tong. Wong Kar Wai will rework his 12-year-old martial arts pic 'Ashes of Time' for fall fest berths in 2007. Fortissimo Films has picked up international sales to Wong Kar Wai's reworked and definitive version of 'Ashes of Time', the arthouse helmer's venture into the martial arts genre. Original pic, released 12 years ago, featured a starry cast of Hong Kong talent who've (mostly) survived the slump since the territory's 'golden age'. Cast includes Tony Leung Chiu-wai, Tony Leing Kar-fai, Jacky Cheung, Charlie Yeung, Maggie Cheung, Brigitte Lin and the late Leslie Cheung. But it was scarcely released outside Asia. 'Ashes of Time - Redux' is an end-to-end re-envisioning of the movie about a fallen swordsman driven by greed. Wong is adding new scenes, re-editing others and rescoring the piece. Delivery is skedded in time for the fall festivals in 2007, after Wong has completed his first English-language movie, 'My Blueberry Nights'. Many thanks to Daydreamer!

What is the relationship between the late Gorgor Leslie Cheung and the Consumer Council? Twenty-one years ago, Leslie Cheung appeared on the cover of the December 1985 issue of the Consumer Council's "Choice" magazine. It was the first time ever that "Choice" used a celebrity on its first colored-cover. At that time, Gorgor was getting very popular thus setting this as a trend.
I chatted with the Chief Executive Chan Wong Wei and Vice Executive Lau Yin Hing of the Consumer Council yesterday. They mentioned that Cheung Luk Ping, Leslie's sister, was the Chief Executive of the Consumer Council since its conception until the mid 80s. She also introduced the "product testing process" to the Council. At that time, Leslie always went to his sister's office at the Consumer Council. Although he did not do so after he became popular since he was busy, his charm and charisma cast a deep impression on Lau Yin Hing. She said, "I had a meal with him. He was very polite and charming and very good looking too." That's right, which male star has the quality of Gorgor? Article written by Lee Pak Fong on December 30, 2006 - source

We had some encounters both on and off screen. We were good partners in the movie. Riding in a vintage convertible with Gor Gor was very cool."

'Farewell My Concubine' has been voted the best Oscar nominated Chinese film in a poll by a Chinese publication company. Meanwhile Leslie's line in 'Days of Being Wild': "I've heard that there's a kind of bird without legs that can only fly and fly, and sleep in the wind when it is tired. The bird only lands once in its life... that's when it dies" came up tops with the most number of votes to win the favourite Chinese movie classic lines. Also in this category, 'Ashes of Time' and 'Happy Together' came in 3rd and 4th place with their respective classic lines. Source: Oriental Daily -LeslieTong.com - many thans to Simie for the news!

Cheung Yiu Wing: All The Good and Righteous People Are Dead - 'Father of concerts', Cheung Yiu Wing blasted at heartless Alan Tam. Impact Entertainment (International) Limited has filed a winding-up petition for Yiu Wing Investment Holdings Limited (formerly known as Yiu Wing Entertainment Co. Ltd.).  Yiu Wing owes Impact Entertainment (International) Limited $820,000.  An angry Yiu Wing blasted Alan Tam who is one of the shareholders of Impact for being heartless and lacking a sense of justice.  He also rebuked the five Wynners group members saying, "They're all connivers". That night after losing his lawsuit Cheung Yiu Wing was still in the mood for a meal of dumplings with family members in Causeway Bay. He was extremely polite when approached by reporters; smilingly fielding questions regarding matters relating to the winding-up of his company. However at the mention of Alan Tam's name (one of the shareholders of Impact), Cheung Yiu Wing exploded in a fit of rage, saying, "The whole bunch of them are connivers! Now it is not as if I am not going to repay the money; they won't even let me pay them back by installments". (The group of people you mentioned included Alan Tam?) "Some years back, these 'five tigers' once asked me to invest in their movie, 'Tigers - The Legend of Canton'; they guaranteed a profit but in the end they lost $4,000,000.  I've been chasing this for 10 years to no avail. Now they turned around to take advantage of me. I've already lodged a complaint in court against Impact Entertainment (International) to recover this debt; this is scheduled to be heard on April 14. The world is like this, when I'm in deficit, they chase me for my debt but when there is a profit I get none. The good and righteous people are dead. Leslie Cheung, Anita Mui and Roman Tam; if they knew I was in trouble, they would help me in the first instant but unfortunately they have passed on". On the same day (19 March) Alan Tam, attending a video recording programme, distanced himself from the matter by pushing the blame on to the other shareholders of the company. He said, "There are many shareholders in the company; everyone has to come out to make a comment together, this matter is for the shareholders to take accountability." On being accused of being a 'conniver', he said, "This is a company matter;  I am not going to respond again." Hacken Lee also did not wish to be involved in this matter choosing to remain a bystander.  He said he had heard about the friction between the two companies but he as the younger generation is quite helpless in this matter.
