The Long Wake

On April 7, 2003 thousands of fans from Hong Kong and all over the world - USA, Canada, Europe, Australia and the whole Asia - attended your wake under the rain queueing for many many hours. Tears and rain all messed up... Heaven was crying for you too, dear Leslie!

Fans could pay the last respect in groups of 50 people until late at night, wearing dark clothes, bringing white roses and receiving a set of postcards that you printed for the fund-raising for the HK Children's Cancer Association on 1996. Also the press could pay its last respect, but no cameras were allowed.

Your beloved Tong Hok Tak arrived early. He sat with the family, looking exhausted and thin. His heart shaped floral arrangement was made to "Ah Jai", with the message "Heaven and Earth Have Their Time, This Love Is Everlasting".

You were a perfectionist in life. Your family and friends also set up the location perfectly. The primary color was white as white roses, lilies, and calla lilies surrounded your photo. The entire altar was obviously elegant and graceful, perfect for your taste. The crew around 10:30 am transported fresh flowers to the funeral hall for decoration. Around 11:30 am Florence Chan and her son entered the funeral home through the rear vehicle entrance. Chan's son held a photo covered with white cloth. Tong Tong around 2:00 pm entered the parking lot in a van with 6 security guards to keep the press at bay. Your altar was set up on the second floor. Because your funeral has no religious preference, in front of your photo were only lit round white candles. The television set played your music videos continuously. In the center of the hall two floral arrangements were set up. One was from Tong Tong, the other was from Florence Chan that said to "My Beloved Leslie, Experienced Together Wind Continues To Blow".

Of course a sea of flowers from fans, common people and celebrities accompanied you at the Hong Kong Funeral House. Many of them could find a place in the House so they were placed outside. Kenneth's message was: "To My boss with irreplaceable splendor; forever will be my little bright star." Anita Yuen and Cheung Chi-Lam's wrote: "Always in my heart". Shu-Qi's wrote: "Thank you for giving us the most beautiful memories." Faye Wong: "You whom had never wanted loneliness, eventually became a legend; let the ones who love you go on and shed tears for you, may your un-peaceful soul have peace. Wong Faye farewells in tears." George Lam and Sally Yeh: "Although today you left, but we wish you can reach a happy and peaceful place"; Alan Tam: "Forever Missing You"; Candy Lo: "Forever Brilliant Gor Gor, Forever Missing You". Flowers also from Alan Tam Fan Club, Danny Chan Fan Club, fans from Malaysia, Singapore, Korea, Japan, Italy as well as Guangzhou, Hengzhou, Tianjin, Shanghai and other areas have turned the streets into a sea of flowers. Many of them had Gor Gor's photo and song lyrics to express their grief. One from fans in Mainland, Taiwan, France, Italy and Korea wrote, "Thinking of how detailed you are, nothing else is valuable." Another from Taiwan wrote, "Who can take your place!"

Among celebrities and friends Eliza Chan, Teresa Mo and her husband, Alan Tam, Hacken Lee, Jacky Cheung, Anita Yuen, Cheng Chi-Lam, Stanley Kwan, Tony Leung Kar Fai, Suzie Wong, James Wong, Ti Lung, Beyond, Twins, Anthony Wong Chau-San, Eddie Lau, Fei Fei, Cherie Cheung, Chow Yun Fat with his wife, Anita Mui, Vivian Chow, Nicholas Tse, Dicky Cheung, Tang Kwong Wing, Law Mei-Mei, Pansy Ho, Hui Chun-Hang, Cally Kwong, Willie Chan, Chingmy Yau, Derek Yee, Law Chi Leung, Edison Chan and many others attended. Christopher Doyle, who left in tears, said 'Happy Together' was the most memorable film on which he and Gor Gor worked together on.

All monetary gifts will be donated to the Children Cancer Fund.
