A Heart-and-Soul Devotion To His Artistic Life
In Hong Kong, there has never been an artist who had commented that he would "die his heart out" in his performances or perform his work "with his heart". But Leslie had said this motto many times throughout his life as a most devoted and sincere artiste. After Leslie had gone, however, a host of a radio program has warned his listeners not to listen to Leslie's songs all by themselves because his songs have a very strong and powerful impact on people: one will easily lose his self-control or become depressed after listening to them. This is understandable as Leslie has sung each and every song with a passionate voice that was overflowing with abundant feelings. If anyone would try to 'use his heart' to discover and study about Leslie, it is not difficult at all that he or she will have an immediate fondness for him.
Being an exceptionally brilliant actor, there is no doubt that Leslie's singing can touch the deepest pit of a listener's heart. Leslie had also mentioned that he has the practice of visualizing a story whenever he was singing a song. When he sang the song 'When Love Has Become The Past', he has become Dieyi in 'Farewell To My Concubine', because he had sung the song with such a gentle, mellow voice yet filled with complete despair that can drive many listeners to tears.
The comment made by HKVP Radio that Leslie has the voice of a sexy angel is absolutely true. In his Mandarin album, Leslie began singing the song ... (the Mandarin version of Glenn Frey’s mega-hit 'The One You Love') by saying the following words with the sexiest voice that has driven many women crazy: "I wanna hold you, kiss you. I love you…"
From having the most touching voice to the sexiest voice, I am amazed to find that Leslie had sung the song 'Little Star' (from the movie 'The Kid') with the pure innocence of a child, but suddenly, in the song 'Greatest Heat', he had sung the song with the wildest passion of a rock singer (these two songs are amongst the many melodious songs which Leslie has composed which are extremely different in style).
Leslie's voice has also a comforting effect on listeners. I have learnt from another fan that she had read an article which described an eight months' old baby would stop crying when ever she heard Leslie singing. As for me, I used to be a very tense person. After Leslie had gone, I have been continuously listening to his songs day and night; and out of my surprise, I found that my nervousness has been alleviated.
Dearest Leslie, let me take this chance to thank you for your companionship through your songs, movies and concert performances during these difficult months after you had left me. It is only you and especially your voice has given me so much comfort in return. The beauty and wonders of your works has proved your heart-and-soul commitment was beyond compare. Leslie, you deserve to be the one and only legend. During the next several decades and in the future, you will still dwell in the hearts of many people. Love you always.
