Appeal to HKFAA and HKTB

Dear friends,

There are strong indications that the HK Government and the authorities concerned are very resentful to the way that Leslie left us. So, they are trying hard to downplay his contributions and seemingly to deprive him of honours or awards that he deserves so much.

In reaction to this, fans in Japan and Korea have been collecting signatures to appeal to the Hong Kong Film Award Association (hereafter referred as HKFAA) for the Life Achievement Award; and Hong Kong Tourism Board (hereafter referred as HKTB) for having Leslie on the "Avenue of Stars". Now that fans from Japan had collected about 1,000 signatures and Korean fans are starting to do so we see the need to pursue this campaign further and on a larger scale.

Therefore, we have drawn up two statements appealing to HKFAA (on the upper part of the page) and HKTB (on the lower part of the page) for fans to sign up for support to this campaign. Please download the page of the statements and simply fill in

(1) your real full name (not nick name please) as signature for support,
(2) the city and country that you are living,
(3) your phone number,
(4) your e-mail address and
(5) date that you sign in your support.

After filling in the details, please e-mail it back to either Grace Lam at schina@on-nets.com or Susanna Leung at wfsljf@netvigator.com, in form of a word file attachment.

Please kindly state "APPEALS" as the e-mail title.

We will print out your returned page on a nice quality paper with colour and will cut the page into two individual cards, one to HKFAA and the other to HKTB. Upon printing out all the "signed" cards, we will bring them to HKFAA and HKTB along with a full profile of Leslie's achievement and a letter explaining the purpose.

Please kindly understand that this is not a gesture of "begging" the honours for Leslie, but rather, we are just trying to alert the Government and authorities concerned, to make them know that there are people out there watching them (for your information: Ng Sze Yuen will propose to HKFAA to present the "Life Achievement Award" to Or Sau Leung in the coming HKFAA ceremony.)

HKTB has just announced the second batch of stars on the "Avenue of Stars", and thus we expect that the next batch will be revealed one or two months later. So, there is certain urgency in pursuing this matter. As such, we would very much appreciate if you could send in your support before December 31, 2003 and that we will be able to bring in the cards to HKFAA and HKTB in early January, 2004.

Please also convey this appeal to your fan friends who may not be able to access internet, and be kind to help them to return their support to us as well.

What we are doing is absolutely necessary to keep Leslie and his wonderful works in the history of the entertainment world in the Chinese communities. Let's join hands, heart to heart, coast to coast, to make it happen.

This campaign will be simultaneously launched on some Mainland China, Japanese and Korean websites.

We look forward to receiving your supports which is of immense importance for keeping the Leslie legacy alive. Thanks very much.

Download here: APPEAL STATEMENT

The recipients of the cards will need to have the contact numbers of the supporters for verifying that there is really such a person.

1st Report - December 25, 2003

Dear friends,

Thanks so much for your great support in sending in your signatures in appealing to HKFAA and HKTB on the subjects of "Life Achievement Award" and the "Avenue of Stars" respectively. So far, we have collected more than 600 signatures from various parts of the world.

We assure you that all personal information written on the appeal statements will be kept in the strictest confidence.
These appeal cards will be brought directly to the authorities concerned by mid January. Hope that by that time, we will collect more than 2,000 signatures. We will keep you informed of the progress in due course.

The closing date for collecting signatures is now extended to January 10, 2004 which will enable us to have more time to collect more signatures.
Once again, thanks for your unconditional support to this important campaign. Your support will not be in vain.

Season's Greetings

Grace, Susanna and Nadia

2nd Report - January 1, 2004

Dear friends who had supported the campaign,

This is the first day of 2004 and in the absence of Leslie, we wish you a happy New Year.

So far, we have the collected approximately 1,500 signatures:

from Japan -  650
from Korea - 360
from China - 180
from Taiwan - 160
from HongKong - 100
from other countries - 80

Hope that we can collect about 2,000 signatures by January 5, 2004 and will get them to HKTB and HKFAA. The letters to these two organizations will be posted soon.

We are grateful for all your support to this campaign though we are being attacked and questioned in the past one week. It has not been easy for us.

If you could read all the newspapers as from December 31, 2003 till today regarding Anita Mui's passaway, you can see that:

-  the HK Government had issued a formal condolence statement to Anita's family just 15 hours after her death and is
planning to give Anita some sort of awards. The Chinese Government Office in Hong Kong did the same soon after the HK Government's. There were streams of condolence statements coming from a large number of official authorities honouring Anita.  Regrettably, our Leslie didn't receive one single word from the Government when he passed away, not to mention from the rest.

- when asked by the reporters if Anita will be given the "Life Achievement Award" in the coming HKFAA ceremony in April, Manfred Wong, the chairman of HKFAA, replied that they will have a meeting in early January to decide on this.  There are many other authorities coming forward to acknowledge that they will be presenting awards and honours to Anita in honour of her contributions to the entertainment business of Hong Kong. Friends, have you ever heard of such kind of response when Leslie passed away?

The reasons for this big contrast? The reasons was stated in our previous message when we first launched this campaign. It is a real pity that someone from Hong Kong who called herself "HK fans" came along and spread that this campaign is not a legimate one and asked fans not to support this. It is a pity too, that some webmasters chose to believe in them and discourage fans to send in their support. We hope that, by now, fans can tell, with their own minds, what is the right thing to do.

Besides, we would like to relay to you that Oriental Daily (a prominent newspaper in HK) had reported about three weeks ago that the former Chairman of HKFAA, his name is  *Ng Sze Yuen, will nominate Mr. Or Sau Leung, a famous stuntman who passed away in Taiwan about a month ago, for the "Life Achievement Award". So, the chance for Leslie to get the "Life Achievement Award" is even reduced. Yet, this may not be important now because Anita could be their first choice for the award now.

Lastly, we would like to let you know with much pain that we have information (sorry if "HK fans" or any or you are asking for proof, we definitely cannot provide and we cannot see any way we can provide) that when Leslie was still on this earth, he was nominated for the Medal of Honour for the 6th SAR (the Hong Kong Government) Anniversary by Josephine Siu Fong Fong for his outstanding contributions to the End Child Sexual Abuse Foundation as well as the Children's Cancer Foundation. It was said that it had been confirmed. Yet, Leslie was finally deprived of this honour simply because the Government was resentful to the way he left us and this award went to another artist. Again this may touch your nerves and it may not be prudent to be made public here, yet, revealing more facts could be helpful for fans to understand the real situation. If you choose not to believe and not to support, we respect your decision. We don't know how many proofs that fans need before they can understand these facts in order to support this campaign. The more proofs you can see, the more Leslie will lose.

We understand that some fans are very concerned with the letters going to the two authorities. They are worried that the tone and the words will be too harsh and could create negative effect on Leslie. To ease their minds, the letters will soon be finalized and and will be put in this website.

However, we are really grateful to those who had sent in their signatures. Without your support, we cannot make it happen. Thank you!

Best wishes,

Grace, Nadia and Susanna

*Remark:  Ng Sze Yuen was the producer of Leslie's very first movie "Erotic Dream of Red Chamber" and he had said a lot of bad words on Leslie after he was gone.

3rd Report - January 8, 2004

We had brought 1,480 signature cards to the HKTB today and we have about another 1,400 signatures to be followed as the second batch.
HKTB executives were very much impressed by the appeal letter, the signature cards and the materials that we presented to them.
We will furnish further information in due course.
We must extend our heartfelt thanks to all the fans who supported this campaign. Without your support, nothing will ever happen.
Grace, Susanna and Nadia

Remarks: We are still receiving signatures from fans supporting this campaign steadily. Those who would like to join this move, please send in your signature!!!

4rd Report - February 2, 2004

Dear friends and supporters of the appeal campaign to HKFAA and HKTB,
We would very much like to update you with the following:

1. HKFAA – Life Achievement Award

Further to the signatures sent in to HKFAA by Japanese fans and Korean fans, our signature cards were sent to HKFAA through a special channel and HKFAA had officially acknowledged receipt.

In most of the newspapers today, the following was reported:

Manfred Wong, the Chairman of HKFAA said in the press conference yesterday, that HKFAA received numerous requests from many Leslie fans all over the world for the “Life Achievement Award” to be honored to Leslie. He remarked that “Life Achievement Award” is only meant for living artists, therefore, as far as retrospective awards are concerned, no matter Leslie, Anita or Or Sau Leung only “appropriate” honors will be considered. Nevertheless, in the coming HKFAA ceremony, there will be a special tribute for Leslie, Anita, Or Sau Leung and Richard Lam.

Yet, in Oriental Daily, it said:

Manfred Wong said HKFAA received streams of requests from many Leslie fans for a commemorative award to be given to Leslie in the coming HKFAA ceremony. The committee will take all the ideas as reference in an effort to come up with an appropriate award for Leslie. Apart from Leslie, a tribute session will be dedicated to Anita Mui, Or Sau Leung and Richard Lam as well.

So, seems like there is some difference in the reports. We will try to find out more and will report in due course.

2. HKTB – Avenue of Stars

We have collected more than 3,500 signatures and they were brought to HKTB in two batches along with our letter and other supporting material. Apart from HKTB, letters were brought to authorities of higher rank through a special connection. Our contact at HKTB told us that HKTB officials were very much impressed by our signature cards and appeal materials, and of course the love from fans towards Leslie. They are now seriously looking into the matter and a file for Leslie is now in place. Several meetings have been held in last week at the board level. Our contact told us that we stand a good chance for what we are requesting.

Please note that HKFAA still has not nominated Leslie for the Avenue of Stars.

We will update all supporters here as soon as we hear any further word from HKTB.

Best wishes,
Grace, Susanna and Nadia

5rd Report - February 6, 2004

Dear friends and supporters of the campaign to the “Avenue of Stars”,

Further to our previous progress updates, we are pleased to share this important news with you:

We received a message from the Hong Kong Tourism Board (HKTB) today confirming that Leslie’s name will definitely appear on the “Avenue of Stars”. The date for official announcement has not been fixed yet. We will be seeing the HKTB to discuss further next week.

So, our mission for the appeal to HKTB regarding Leslie’s name on the "Avenue of Stars" is now done.

We have been working on this important campaign in a very low profile.
We must apologize that we could not release too much information on the net throughout the course of our work.

The reason why we have to work in such low profile is obvious: to avoid any unnecessary and unreasonable disturbances or attacks from somebody from Cyberworld who covered herself in the name of “HK fans”.
If you can recall: she wrote a very **distorted message on her own base, Leslie's Pillow, a few webs in the Mainland China and on For Leslie’s Lovers in Japan on December 25, 2003 in an effort to bring enough damages to this campaign.
Many chose to believe in her message and stopped supporting the appeal.

That was before December 30, 2003, the day Anita Mui passed away. After December 30 i.e. after all Leslie's fans witnessed the unpleasant incidences related to Leslie pursuant to Anita’s death, signatures supporting the appeal flushed in from all over the world. Many sent in a message along with their signatures apologizing for being influenced by "HK fans" and thus they were late.

We are pretty sure that, today, “HK fans” would feel embarrassed to read her own message which she wrote on December 25, 2003 on many websites.

Since the day we first launched this campaign on December 18, 2003, we had gone through different emotions: expectation, discouragement, anxiety, disappointment, agony, stress for heavy workload and now JOY!

Last but not least, we would like to say: Life is composed of conflicts and compromises. It is absolutely fine to have differences in opinion and methodology between each individual. If “HK fans” did not agree on the campaign that we are working on, it is not really necessary to distort facts to achieve her purpose of destroying other’s work, particularly when the work is for our dearest Leslie. Nevertheless, what really made us shivered was her words to a fan that she talked to after knowing that many fans had stopped supporting, she said “I feel good to see the damage”!

Will keep you posted on any further development.

Best regards,
Nadia, Grace and Susanna

** Sorry that we do not want to take up too much space here to explain how “HK fans” distorted the facts. We may talk about it later if anyone are interested.

IMPORTANT ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS: Ms. Kuniko Miyazaki had rendered wonderful support and help in this campaign. Without her input and hardwork in many aspects, this campaign wouldn't be a success. Thanks, Kuniko!
Credit should also go to Kingka from Korea: thank her for great support in this campaign!!!!

I need to make a statement about Red Mission and our appeal. Actually this campaign on "HKFAA" and "Avenue of Stars"  was organized under the name of Leslie Legacy, which is different from R.E.D. Mission now. Since R.E.D. Mission, as you know, is a registered organization in HK by Leslie Cheung Cyberworld website for organizing their coming April 1 event.   So, our original purpose of  R.E.D. Mission has now been deviated. Besides, I have resigned from R.E.D. Mission since the day we were insulted by "HK fans". In order to pursue our campaign in an official and formal way, we have legally registered ourself under the laws of Hong Kong as Leslie Legacy Association Ltd.  Everything related to our campaign has been done under the name of Leslie Legacy. We will announce soon our existence on the Pillow.

The special private screening is one of the rare chances that you will be able to appreciate Leslie's early performances in a theatre. Priority is given to you, as a supporter to our previous campaign to HKTB and HKFAA. So, don't miss this rare occasion.

Yours truly,
Leslie Legacy Association Ltd.

8th Report - March 24, 2004

Dear friends,
Here are some updates on the Avenue of Stars that you may be interested to know.

The once delayed construction progress of the Avenue is now catching up, and the inauguration is now scheduled on April 27. (The very original schedule was April 23, and owing to some delay during the construction progress, the scheduled inauguration was once postponed to July).

A total of 73 celebrities will be named on the Avenue and about half of them had passed away. 23 of the names have been announced and all the rest living celebrities had already made their palm prints (not publicly).
Manfred Wong of Hong Kong Film Award Association has succeeded in convincing HKTB that they will be the party to make the announcement on the full list of celebrities who will appear on the Avenue of Stars.

The authorities have decided that there will not be any palm print for the deceased celebrities because it is hard to verify its authenticity. As such, we will only be able to see Leslie’s name on the Avenue.
In fact, HKTB had helped to locate Leslie’s palm prints with the leads and clues provided by fans, yet, it was in vain.

We will try to update the information regarding the Avenue of Stars here from time to time.

This information was provided by the Commissioner for Tourism today.

Best wishes,
Leslie Legacy Association

Best wishes,
Leslie Legacy Association
